3870, TT2 and navman 3000 sleeve.. GPS Position unreliable..

please can some one help me.. i have cpq ipaq 3870, navman 3000 sleeve, and TT2 software... i just have a message GPS position unreliable... its driving me mad trying to solve this problem...HELP!!! 8O

i have just gone into GPS info and i get the following error message... ' Unable to open the port COM5:, last error 55'...........when i click ok another message appears...'failed to get NMEA data sleeve comms error'............Help!!!...

As advised by Dave ina PM, he asked me to try the Antistatic bag trick... the only difference this makes is that i can now see more satelites.. however none of them i can hget a fix... Please can someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am new to this GPS lark too, but I have a similar setup to you. An Ipaq 3970 and a Navman 3400 sleeve and TomTom software.

I also had a very similar problem getting a lock onto the sats. The GPS could see plenty of them, got good signals on them, but never seemed to lock onto them. This sounds like the problem you are having.

Initially, I thought that it was to do with interference, and like you did the anti-static bag trick, which by the way, works a treat in reducing the time to get a fix, and increases the number of sats received, hence giving a better and more reliable GPS lock, but anyway, it still didn't get me a lock.

I tinkered, and installed the 3.1.6 serial driver, and also changed the Com port and the receiver type on the GPS page.

I changed the receiver type to TomTom GPS (Ipaq Sleeve) and set the COM port to GPS Receiver Com6:

Now I get my fix in less than 45 seconds, and usually with 5+ satellites (thanks to the anti-static bag).

Give this a try and see what happens.

Somthing else I did was to install Winfast Navigator, which appears to be a diagnostic utility and can tell you all sorts of information about the satelittes signal being received and can allow you to changes settings. I didn't really do much with that except to change the baud rate from 4800 (no sats seen) through all settings up to 57600 where suddenly loads of satellites were seen. No other settings apart from 57600 did anything.

Not sure if that had anything to do with getting a signal in TomTom though.

If you can't still can't get it to work and you want to know the precise settings I have TomTom (and Winfast Navigator) set to, just leave a message here and I'll look them up.

Have to say, that now it works, I am very pleased with it.

If you can get me your settings I would apreciate it.I have a Navman 3450 along with an Ipaq 3800 and cannot get a reliable fix. Sad

kevin, i tried ur trick and nothing happens....installed win navigator and guess what.....NOTHING!!! i have emailed navman and guess what......NOTHING!!!... i have sent nunerous emails and they are just not intereste!!!... i think may loose me money and purchase a BT reciever...
Any ideas which maybe the best to purchase for a 3870...
