That's the message you usually get when there are no maps loaded. You'll need to reload the maps from CD/DVD, and to do that you'll need the unlock code.
You should be able to get the unlock code from the MyGarmin website.
Getting hold of the DVD/CD is a bit trickier. Once you've got you're unlock code let us know what version maps it is for and someone might be able to send you a copy.
If you're version is 8 or lower you could upgrade the maps (costs about £40). This will get you a new unlock and the latest maps from Garmin. There are some new maps due out soon so I'd try to get hold of older maps |

EDIT
ITS SORTED NOW.
i followed the advice that philhornby posted on these forums.
The idea is to create GMAPPROM.UNL in the same directory (\Garmin) as GMAPPROM.IMG on the C510. So if you know that your C510 appears as drive G: (for example), you can click "START" and then "Run..." -- enter
"notepad g:\garmin\gmapprom.unl" in the Open dialogue that appears.
When you click OK, Notepad should open and say :-
"Notepad cannot find the g:\garmin\gmapprom.unl file, do you want to create a new file?" ... which you do.
Then type your 25 characters in and click "File | Exit" . Notepad should then say "The text in g:\garmin\gmapprom.unl" has changed. Do you want to save the changes?" - which again, you do.
(swap G: in my example for your actual drive letter) |

Ah yes, some of the Garmin units do lose their unlock code occasionally, and you have nicely described the method of fixing it. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Hi Swing, I still have a small problem.
the garmin had florida maps on it, but now they wont load.
i have reinserted the florida memory card but it wont copy it to my garmin as theres now room.
i presume that even though the florida maps dont work that there still partly on the garmin taking up room.
would you know how to remove the florida maps so i can reinstall them.
thanks gav |

If you have a gmapsupp.img file in the same \Garmin directory, this may well be the Florida maps (unless you have added any other maps at any point). If so, take a copy of the file onto your computer (just in case it's not!) and try again. I suspect the loss of the .unl file caused you to lose a flag in that file re the Florida maps, so reinstalling them may sort it out. After that, take a full backup (ie take a copy of every file) on the unit, and then you will have an easier restore process should this or anything else happen. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Sure - if you delete the gpsmapsupp.img file from the internal memory (having taken a copy of it to your PC first), when you reenter the card it should sort everything out as if it was the first time you used the Florida card. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |

Ah, sorry, I misread your typo as saying it was there.
I would, as you say, just use the maps from the card itself. _________________ Please don't be offended if I do not reply to a PM - please ask questions via the forums. |
