At last, the EU appear to have left us alone as far as going metric is concerned....but is it just a matter of time before it creeps in anyway?

As an "older" person, I'm into both the metric and avoirdupois system.
I was taught imperial measures at school and used them up until the early 1970's when metric appeared, as with most of the country at the time it was very "foreign" trying to pick up metric - although it was a dam site easier.
I now use metric "most" of the time but am still able to converse with imperial when i need to.
I still prefer to order a pint of beer, but I still find it strange that you order 1kg of 6 inch nails, there is a lot of confusion in the integrated metric system but it is still good to have (and the choice) of both systems. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I used to think we should stay as we were but it's all such a mess now, we measure small distances in Metric but measure long distances in Imperial, crazy!
I think we need to swallow the pill and switch entirely to Metric and embrace the Euro. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I might have to buy my fuel in litres but still convert it to the good old British Gallon to work out the fuel consumption in Miles Per Gallon, and I still measure everything in feet & inches. I was taught Imperial and still use it. _________________ Graham.

Anyone who went to school post 1972 (ish) will have been bought up with metric and anything else is rubbish to them, so metric is the only system they will use.
I still don't feel European and like others like to have a bit of our old heritage in there somewhere, after all it isn't as if it is life or death that we need to be totally metric.
Although our system is primarily metric, there is enough imperial in there somewhere to keep us all happy without effecting the other.
Tesco's and other stores now recognise both sytems on their scales.
My sixteen year old son knows some imperial, if only from the technical details on American cars.
America and some other countries will NEVER change, so i feel it is good to have both, even if a little confusing at times. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I'm bi-lingual and am fairly happy with both, but I feel that we have had to surrender more of our heritage than the French, Germans and other EU nations.
We already have a common currency - plastic
I remember when the price of petrol used to only change at budget time and then it was as much per gallon as it now changes per litre...and nobody bats an eyelid
Changing to metric might just be another sneaky excuse for the powers that be to increase prices as so many of our EU friends found when the Euro came in _________________ Andy

I'm with GJF and Gps_fan. Due to part of my job I have to know and convert both imp and met and builders in this country still measure everything with the heal and toe of their boots.
String is also often a useful guage to measure with! _________________ Dom

Particularly when used by a women to measure with, just take one of those "stretchable" sewing cloth tapes!

Builders measuring by "eye" is also very accurate. _________________ TomTom Go 60

Those builders tend to be very proficient at Fishing, especially when ferering to the 'one that got away'.
I'm feeling a bit patriotic at the moment and I think we should announce that the Olympics will be in Imperial measurments. That'll amuse johnny foreigner for a while! _________________ Dom

Which is of little use when trying to convert the value of something from Euros to GBP!

That may well be, it certainly appears to have been in most EU countries when they transitioned but it can only happen once.
As has been said, most of use who are 40 and under have been brought up in Metric, even building materials are sold in metric measures now and it's a joke to have the two in everyday use.
I couldn't give a fig what measurement unit the yanks use, we're Europeans! _________________ Darren Griffin |

This is probably why they always bomb freindlies, because when the british say they a few hundered yards in front of the enemy, old trigger happy red neck is thinking in miles! _________________ Dom

Who said?
I can't remember voting for that one!
We might be "European" but are we really European?
Euro's who wants them?
Most so called Europeans who have the Euro prefer the old currency back, that has been suggested by both the French and Germans. _________________ TomTom Go 60

ah, but plastic is accpeted WORLDWIDE - you just need one card and that will pay for goods wherever you go.
The Euro might be common across The Channel, but a GPS will be xxx Euros in France and yyy Euros in Germany for example - so there's still some degree of 'conversion' between countries _________________ Andy
