Apart from mapshare, are the maps the same on the 720 and the One XL Europe?

I'm going to replace my PDA with a PND today and can't really see a reason why i should go for the 720 unless it has newer maps.

Originally I was going to go for a ONE but I do like the widescreen.

Any info on maps (and anything I might be missing) most welcome.

PS - My car has voice operated handsfree telephone and a hard wired Ipod kit so I don't need them on a PND. I also assume that even if I buy an XL today, I'll be able to update the software with Mapshare when it comes out as a software release.

Thanks

They are not the same. The One ships with v6 maps and the x20 series with v7.
However the differences are probably very slight.

V7 Software will PROBABLY be released as a free update for the older models (it always has been before, but who knows with TomTom?), but AFAIK you will still need to buy v7 maps to be able to use mapshare.

Just to check that I'm reading correctly, the XL will probably get Mapshare at a later date BUT the maps it currently haps won;t support that feateure of the software?

Looks like I'll have to spend another £90 as i really want Mapshare.

thanks

The XL has 675 maps and the x20 has 705 maps. Both of these maps are MapShare capable although a MapShare capable Navcore version hasn't been released for the XL. The main difference is that the 705 maps have enhanced building detail in some city centres.

No probs. You're not the first and I doubt you'll be the last. The important thing is that the maps are TA 2007. 675 is 2007.1 and 705 is 2007.4, I think.

What is building detail? Does it show you photos?

But back to the original question, if I get an XL now I will probably be able to get mapshare on it in the near future without buying new maps?

Thanks

No, building detail is just better definition of the outlines and shapes of buildings. As to MapShare on the XL, whilst nothing has been laid down in writing, a TomTom representative did indicate that MapShare would be available for older units in due course. As the XL was the last pre-MapShare unit I would expect it to be high up the list.

On their FAQ site here TomTom say Mapshare will also work with 675.1409 maps

You could also consider the newer One V3 which also comes with Map Share and V7 maps, but no wide screen, bluetooth or even SD card slot, the plus point being the price it is considerably cheaper than the XL or x20 devices - Mike

Well I bought a 720 instead of an XL and I think that the maps must be different. When I went into TT Home I checked out the latest maps. The Maps of WE V675 are under 1 gig but the maps installed on the 720 are over 1.5 gigs. Now I know that somebody mentioned more building detail but 1/2 gig extra? Surely their must be other things as well.

Apologies if been mentioned before.

Surely there is..
The WE675 on a OneXL is a "stripped" map,
to fit within the 1Gb internal memory..

The Central and Western Europe 675 is about 1.6GB, wich is not stripped.
This map can be used with OneXL if you put it on a 2Gb SD-card.

The map on the newer 720 is about 1.5Gb...

In which case....

As the 720 map is ONLY Western Europe, how could they fit all those Central European countries in 0.1 Gb?

By that reasoning, doesn't it it sound like there *is* still some "striping on the C+WE v675?
