I heard on the radio this morning that a new breed of vandal proof Gatso is making its way to our shores.
Apparently, these cameras do things like rewind the film and sound an alarm at the local police station if they're attacked.
I haven't, however, managed to find any further information about these cameras online as yet.
Seeing some of the pictures on the site below, I'm not sure that rewinding film and sounding an alarm would really be enough to make them vandal proof:

Are you sure its not one of These - currently under evaluation, but the description certainly matches it, perhaps they have type approval now? - Mike |

Rewind the film! Surely they're not still deploying new cameras that use film? _________________ Darren Griffin |

No...I think he means the Dutch thing shown in the D Mail today.
And, while we're on it, I would like to reiterate another point made some weeks back.
I do think it time that the database of Gatso cameras really should be split down into these new type of cameras which can catch you travelling either way....Truvelos particularly should have a seperate category as they are more of a danger than the regular cameras....being forward facing.
(I know, I knw, keep to the speed limit and you won't get caught etc.etc.) |

Truvelos can be both forward- and rear-facing, as I know to my cost! |

Yup, I know, but generally, I feel these are the 'big ones' to try to watch out for....'specially when its dark, you don't know the area etc. By the way, what is their range before they pick you up ? ie When is it 'too late?' |

In my case, they took the photograph when the wheels were physically on the 3 white lines on the road. These white lines are surprisingly close to the camera. |

I think this will stop them being erected more than anything else. _________________ Acer N35

Why the h**l do the "partnerships" call these b****y things "safety" cameras?
We all know they are just another revenue earner for this Socialist government, and nothing to do with safety. Another case of finger wagging by the Blair/Brown partnership.
Whatever happened to the DASC, (Drivers Against Speed Cameras)?
It's not speed that kills, it's the nut behind the wheel.
Besides, most if not all speed limits were set during the horse and cart era, and should be updated to acknowledge the improvements in road surfacing and vehicle technology. |

I've just read the "This is London" article. I have to say that I found the following view entertaining, yet it will probably be true:
Dan, Swindon, England wrote: | I am convinced that this will become a competition to see who can disable/work around these cameras first. I am all for cameras in the correct places, dangerous places (notoriously difficult roads), safety conscious places (school routes) but it is not going to be long before some joker fires an electro magnetic device at the machine. I'd like to see it detect that one coming. |
Mind you, I'm not sure how many people have access to a mobile Electro Magnetic Device that's capable of firing an EMP at the camera.

Maybe this is another use for those damned combine harvesters that keep accosting me.
The simplest thing of all would just be a piece of paper stuck over the lens or an aerosol - I doubt either of these would trigger the vibration or smoke sensors. _________________ Andy

It's a rare horse & cart that'll do 30MPH.
My understanding is that some of the limits were introduced to help to reduce fuel consumption....we all know the story about the AC Cobra & the M1...surely?? _________________ Jaguar XF R Sport AWD

I've had this one sent to me today, can anyone ID the camera installation type for this pair? Spotted at Winterbourne Stoke just South of Stonehenge on the A303.
It's labelled as GATSO but the two new cameras appear to operate in conjunction, note the pre-existing GATSO behind!
