Do Variable Speed Limits Work?

I'm a 'NO'. Speed limits in general don't work, so why on earth should variable ones. When in roadworks with a temporary 50 limit, I slow down to 50, but seen loads of loons just whizzing by at silly speeds. Unfortunately the numpty in the car isn't the one who is going to die when he hits a road worker.

This is true - but what I was trying to find out is whether people think variable speed limits work in so far as keeping traffic moving

yes i think they improve the traffic flow, but harping back to an old subject, more traffic cops being visible and lane control would improve it even more Wink

In a que the slow lane becomes the fast lane, just watch the trucks and when the road clears, see how long it takes you to catch them up.

Automatic Sensors??? So why does it put up a speed limit of 50 when the traffic is solid nose to tail, doing between 10 and stop?

Had to vote no on this one.

I use the restricted bit of the M42 every day, and for my 90-120 minute commute it is the only part I dread Mad

Every motorway feeding to or from that section of M-way flows fine but you can place money on that section being a snails pace 50mph regardless of traffic volume, just incase it gets busy later, maybe, kind off, or because it's approaching rush hour and they might make a few quid off the cameras.

And that's another thing you can be sitting there all nice and legal like (50mph sign, 50ish indicated on GPS) yet teh fellow next to you goes through with another 5-10mph under his belt, and does the camera flash? does it

.

And heaven forbid anyone should break down in one of the pull off areas, because if they do the signs go down to 40, sometimes 30 and I've seen them as low as 20 Censored

Just to reinforce my NO. They don't work because they don't respond to traffic. Like I said, I've been on the M42 in almost stationary traffic, with the signs reading 50 for long distances. If they worked, they'd be saying 10 or even STOP to let the traffic ahead get away.
