Here's the reply I got from TomTom this morning. At least they know about the problems and they've promised a fix.

Dear Mr xxxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.

This is currently under investigation. As a work around, To overcome this, disable Bluetooth on the TomTom device before connecting it to the computer. Go to Change preferences / Bluetooth preferences / Disable Bluetooth.

This will be addressed in one of the next software updates.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

I can also confirm that this "workaround" works fine - just tested it.

Mods - Please make this a sticky - there are many people with this problem

So yet again we are beta testing TomTom kit. You would think something like this would have been checked and tested before they released an update Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad poor show TomTom

hardly beta testing... do you know what a beta tester does???

it's a software error - get over it, there's hundreds of them in loads of different products. If a manufacturer were to get everything right, straight off the bat - then we'd never have anything that contains software released, ever.

Personally I think you are being over-generous towards TomTom. There are three or four major errors in this software. Their quality assurance department is in need of a kick up the backside.

Like most of the other problems, this one isn't 'across the board'. I have Bluetooth enabled and have never had an xulrunner error.

It might not be "across the board" but it's sufficiently significant.

Not really, 3 or 4 major errors on a computer product is absolutely nothing...

Look at Windows - both Vista and XP for example, or lets say the Xbox 360 - the amount of 'significant' updates to all of those are fairly high.

A beta tester is someone who signs up and tests hardware or software that is at the pre-release stage. I'm sure the TT520/720 were finalised and sent off for production before they released TT Home 2 (which is still a Beta version, and people who are using it have agreed that they know it is a beta and as such don't expect full flawless functionality). As it was shipped before Home 2, you can almost expect a few incompatibilities...

I think people are being unfairly harsh on tomtom.

Just a couple of points for clarity:

1. The problem is not with Home 2 - it's with the Navcore 7.010 software which which was released a couple of weeks ago.

2. Home 2 is no longer beta - It's prime time and is now what the install of the 720 downloads as default - you can't download anything else from TT.

3. This fault is pretty fundamental and I would have expected it to have been picked up with even the minimum amount of testing.

4. Although it's the "current" version Home 2, by TT own admission, does not have all the functionality yet of the previous 1.6 release.

On the strength of which I decided - Go for it with the brand new exchanged 720 received yesterday.
I started at where I'd stopped yesterday ...
GO720, App 7.000 (8286/070629) OS:2614, GPS v1.21 Boot 5.4057
GO710, App 6.525 (7714/070417) OS:1619, GPS v1.21 Boot 4.86
Home 1.6.020 (May 15 2007 15:22:10)
Nokia 6230i phone, paired with and connected to GO710.
In that configuration, when I went to use GO710 Virtual device, it downloaded a component, successfully, and the 710 virtual device worked.
I switched device and the GO720 downloaded whatever and also worked the virtual device.
Leaving the SD card in when switching off, caused the 720 computer voice to be lost.

I then allowed all updates to happen.
GO720, 7.010 (8290/070711), OS:2618, GPS v1.21 Boot 5.4062.
GO710 unchanged.
Home 2.0.0.370.
Nokia 6230i paired with and connected to GO710.

I went to use GO720 virtual device, it downloaded a component successfully and the 720 virtual device worked fine.
Switched devices and the GO710 also downloaded a component successfully and the virtual 710 device worked fine.
Leaving the SD card in when switching off caused nothing unusual on the 720.

So I unpaired and disconnected the phone from the GO710 - I can't use it anyway, because the speaker is so poor.
Paired it to GO720, but then switched phone off. Started Home 2. Went to use virtual 720, download component crashed, XULRunner and closed down.

Uninstalled Home, reinstalled Home 1.6.020. Went to use virtual 720, it appeared to download component successfully, but when I clicked virtual power button it crashed. This time, it did not identify XULRunner, something like 7010 (8290 .... etc.

I'm sticking with Home 1.6.020, which I prefer to Home 2.
So, the GO710 works fine.
The GO720 works fine and I'll keep it at 7.010 with phone paired and connected.
Both 710 and 720 will download GPSfix via Home, 720 will download and upload Map corrections for Mapshare via Home.
At this stage, the only thing I can identify wrong is that with phone paired and connected to 720 (which I want), I can't use virtual device with GO720. That doesn't bother me, except insofar as it doesn't work as advertised. It is inconvenient, because I occasionally like to use virtual device to browse map and of course, can't use it to plan routes or itineraries (but I never did before).

So, Tim, what would you recommend - get another exchange from Handtec, or carry on and hope TomTom fix it via software/App updates?

I got the same reply from TomTom as everyone else.

Dear Customer

Please go to Change preferences - Bluetooth preferences - Disable Bluetooth on your device before connecting it to your computer. You will then be able to use Tom Tom HOME without the error. This will be resolved shortly with an update.

With Best Regards

Honestly Dennis, I couldn't say. I've not had the contact problem that others have had with their RIDER units, I've not had this xulrunner problem, I've never had the problems that others have had with their Navman units (only 16 active custom POIs), etc..

The only problem I have with my 520 is that the New York (MapShare) settings are reset to default every time I connect it to my laptop.
