Additional iGO Routing Option
Apparently in addition to the Route Types Fastest, Shortest and Economic, there is another type called Easy.
This is not normally available but by editing the three user interface files, menus_240_320.ui, menus_320_240.ui and menus_240_240.ui you can activate this option.
First make a backup of the original data.zip file then unzip the working version and locate each of the above files in the ui, uil and ui240x240 folders respectively. In each file locate the line beginning with:
(NB '~' should be left and right angle brackets)
~SLIDER btn_config1 var=vRouteType
value="Fastest|FAST|Shortest|SHORT|Economic|ECO" .......................~
and insert Easy|SIMPLE| in the required position in the list e.g.
(NB '~' should be left and right angle brackets)
~SLIDER btn_config1 var=vRouteType
value="Easy|SIMPLE|Fastest|FAST|Shortest|SHORT|Economic|ECO" .......................~
You can insert it anywhere in the list providing you retain the correct order and syntax of '|' symbols. When finished editing, zip it all up to a new data.zip file and copy to the iGO folder on the PDA.
This routing option, whilst still not ideal, does use more Major Roads in it's calculations and tends to avoid Minor Roads.

I do not recommend using it, it makes too long routes at some cases. |

Hi Fable
I have tried this option over many known routes in the UK and in France (both long and short) and it is significantly better than the "Fastest" option. Yes, some of the routes may be longer in distance, but by preferring major roads and avoiding minor roads the journeys will actually be quicker.
The iGO "Fastest" routing actually uses more Minor Roads than TomTom's "Fastest" routing and is therefore worse in this respect. Now TomTom's routing has even been criticised in the National Press for sending people down Minor and unmarked roads so iGO will face even more criticism.
So why not provide the "Easy" routing option and at least let the users have the choice. Many people do prefer the easy option of using motorways etc. and don't want to be directed down minor roads even if this does save some kilometres.

I think it's because the different releases of the maps. With the maps distributed with Mio the fastest routing was improved. These maps will be upgraded in the R2 release of iGO. |

I managed to borrow a friends Mio 710E for a few days to compare the routing with iGO.
The Mio 'Fastest' routing is indeed better than the iGO 'Fastest' routing and tends choose routes which include more main roads. Even with this improvement it still uses far too many minor roads which the 'Easy' routing option tends to avoid.
The 'Easy' routing option can create longer routes as it is heavily biased towards Motorways but with Major roads given a much lower emphasis. Therefore if the only available Motorways take a long circuitous route then that is what you get.
What I would like to see is an 'Easy' routing option with the same heavy bias towards Motorways and with a slightly lower but still heavy bias towards Major roads. This would indeed give an 'Easy' routing and would tend to give reasonably short routes following Major roads if Motorways were not available.

I'll definately have to agree with linknet...
I have both Navman ICN530 and Mio C510E. Due to it's more routing options (urbans roads and main roads preferences), ICN530 has more precise and accurate routing algorithm than C510E. You can't seem to tell C510E when you don't want to use urban roads (specially when travelling thro London). For example, to get from SE London (Bromley) to N London (Barnet), Mio will take you thro blackwall tunnel and them thro Hackney, Tottenham and Wood Green (at 'fastest' preference)... which is a nighmare! ICN530 will avoid this route and will take you via blackwall tunnel, A12, then A406, if urban road avoidance is selected, which is approx 20min faster.
However, with this new Easy option it'll avoid minor urban A roads and take you thro A12 & A104 (continuous road from Blackwall Tunnel)which saves you extra 15 to 20 minutes on the total journey time. |

There are obviously different map versions around as well as the Easy/Fastest routing options.
I have just calculated the above route on a C510E and I get the same route whether I use Easy or Fastest.
The route it gives me is: Blackwall Tunnel - A12 - A106 - A102 - A107 - A503 - A105 - A109 - A1000 (23 miles) and doesn't appear to use the A104. How does that compare to the Easy route you obtained ?
I find that Navigon 5 gives far better routes generally as shown below:
Using motorways: Blackwall Tunnel - A12 - A406 - M11 - M25 - J24 - Barnet (37 miles)
Avoiding motorways: Blackwall Tunnel - A12 - A406 - Barnet (27 miles) which is similar to the Navman.

I think I've lost myself between the different GSP systems. Here's what I did... I think:
Navman:
(More Motorways, Less Urban Roads):
Blackwall Tunnel - A12 - A406 - Barnet.
Mio:
Easy routing:
Blackwall Tunnel - A12 - A106 - A102 - A107 - A503 - A105 - A109...
Touched on A12/A406 intersection on the map, then 'Add via'.

Anyway how do you find the Navman ICN530 compared with the Mio C510E ? My constant problem is being routed down narrow unclassified roads, it seems that the Navman is better in this respect, is that correct ?
How does it perform otherwise and which do you prefer ?

Hi Roger,
I prefer iCN530's routing capability, as it gives you more control over routing via it's sophisticated routing options, i.e. less/more motorways, less/more urban roads - see routing options at:

But I also like Mio C510E's routing flexibility, where you can add your own via points to the route very easily. The maps are excellent, the speed is lot better, and you get a lot more for your money than iCN530.
On iCN530, you have to play around with the Routing options to get it to select a route you prefer. Adding 'avoids' or 'multi-stops' is little difficult and fiddly to set up. Navman should have just added a 'Via' option and that would have been lot better.
If I was pushed to choose between the two, I guess I go for MioC510E. |

I think if iGO had the routing options as Navman iCN530, the competition would never stand a chance!... Let's hope their future releases include more intelllgent routing options than just Fastest Shortest & Economical. After all, leaving all the other extras to a side, for a GPS unit, ROUTING should be the most important functionality.

I agree 100% with that.
Improve the ROUTING first and foremost. Unfortunately that applies to most navigation software on the market.

Yes it's still available but the files to modify are as follows:
igo_se1\240_240\ui\route_settings_240_240.ui
igo_se1\240_320\ui\route_settings_240_320.ui
igo_se1\320_240\ui\route_settings_320_240.ui
Search for "SLIDER btn_config1" to find the line to modify in each file.
