|
I am attempting to delete and reinstall my ' tidied up' callers list on my 700 . I have deleted the existing list via my comp. and this has deleted the actual numbers but not the names, has anyone any information as to how to completely delete the contacts list so that I can reinstall the new one ? |

I think that there are 3 files that are associated with the phone:-
Contacts.txt - your phone book. File located in root directory and/or contacts sub-directory on the tomtom.
Callers.txt - people that have called you via your tomtom. You can delete this and the next time you get a caller the software on your tomtom will create a new file for you.
Called.txt - people you have called via your tomtom. You can delete this and the next time you make a call the tomtom software will create a new file.
All files are text based files. To ensure you have erased any of them delete the file in its entirety. It sounds like you have edited the file.
But I am a little confused as to what you are trying to achieve because you refer to the "callers list " and then you write about "delete the contacts list" - and, these are separate files.
To re-build or install a new phone book then there is a file available in the download section of this website to assist.

Thanks RQ, I think you may be correct in saying that I am editing the file instead of deleting the whole, I shall try again !! Sorry to confuse in my original post, I am talking about my contacts list, thanks again

Hello again RQ, Afraid not having a lot of luck with this deleting lark. went into root dir. and deleted all files and folders relating to phone lists. when rebooted Tom Tom it had all phone lists greyed out as was expected. Reinstalled phone numbers from mobile phone B.T. checked list on comp. and all was correct but when called up list on Tom Tom it had still got the deleted names in the list. So they must be still installed in a file somewhere. I think I shall give up and live with it !!! Thanks for trying anyway,
Regards,

This is a puzzler.
Let me get this correct in my head.
1. You deleted all contacts.txt files from your tomtom. Including sub-directories as well.
2. Your computer had a file called contacts.txt on it and that has the correct phone numbers in it. This version of the file you transferred to your tomtom.
3. Your Tomtom phone list still has telephone numbers that you have deleted.
It seems that there is still a file somewhere on the tomtom. Have a go at steps 1 -3 again just to be sure.
In the meantime I will see if I can replicate this problem. _________________ RQ

continuing saga....
At present time I have now reinstalled my last backup.
TT connected to comp.
I have a folder in the root dir. called contacts.
Within this folder I have text files called contacts.. called.. and callers.
I also have seperate text files with the same names further down the list.
I deleted all files and the folder.
On checking TT after disconnecting from comp. the screen icons appeared to have been removed because they were greyed out.
Updated the phone list in my mobile phone and transfered this new list to TT via BT.
Reconnected TT to comp. and opened the contacts file , which had been reinstalled obviously, and the new list appeared to have been installed.
Disconnected TT from comp. again and on opening the phone and contacts list , the actual numbers seem to have been deleted but the old contact names are still there. Checked my mobile phone list and it doesn't appear to have much relation to what TT has, even the order in which they are in my phone,
It has got my head scratching, not that that takes very much but what the comp. tells me is in TT doesn't seem correct for some reason,

Do you have a sub-directory called contacts on the TT? _________________ RQ

My only last suggestion is to:-
1. remove all the contacts.tx files from the TT - be they in the root directory or a folder.
2. start your TT and check that phone list is greyed out. And not useable.
3. send me the contacts file that you want to put on your TT (I will pm you my email) and I will see if there are any entries without phone numbers. _________________ RQ

Whilst on this subject....
Why can't you simply add an extra number into your phone book using your Tom Tom ? If someone who is not in your phone book calls you, to add them to your phone book, you have to connect to your PC, find the relevant number in your callers text file and copy it into your contacts text file, before adding their name to the entry. Seems a bit of a roundabout way to do things when a simple 'ADD CONTACT' icon on your device would make it easy.
Or am I just being thick ? _________________ Tommo...

No, that would be a good idea. And, maybe they could extend it so that you could edit on the TT.
It would be good to be able to
1. add a name and phone number manually
2. edit to change a number or a name
3. delete a number or a name
And they have all of that facility already in various menus. (Choosing letters and numbers and storing them) - so, presumably, it wouldn't be too difficult to programme it. Perhaps we ought to ask TT R&D if they would consider that as an improvement.
They may reply that the funtionality they have is associated with your own mobile phone. And, if someone calls you then their details will be on your mobile. So, you can add, edit or delete their details or phone numbers on your phone and then re-send your address book to the TT. And update your phone numbers that way.
But we can still ask. _________________ RQ

Unfortunately Richard as you know there are not many phones which have the full transfer of phone book function which works with Tom Tom. I will try to contact TT and see what their response is. _________________ Tommo...
