25/05/07? That was yesterday Odd also that the BBC News Item claims it is a forward facing type yet the image Andy snapped on the A40 is rearwards facing? _________________ Darren Griffin |

How can you tell? I always wonder why Truvelo cameras where on the "wrong" side of the road until i found out.
EDIT: Just noticed the traffic in the pictures....

Just saw the news item (it'll likely be repeated on the hour at 9) and this was for the rear facing cameras with the speed limit and a Gatso logo lit up on the rear.
These would be a move in the right direction I believe. They still don't do anything to counteract the belief that these are cash cows and often placed in terms of maximum revenue rather than accident blackspots though. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Remember, Crown just manufacture the posts, for something to fit inside. Presumably a Gatso innards would be rear facing, Truvelo forward facing. Could give us some problems identifying when we submit a new one. Getting closer to the day for moving away from Gatso, Truvelo, Monitron etc to simply "fixed".
And isn't "forward" and "rear" facing debatable? - facing rearwards from you or facing the rear of your vehicle?
I agree with Darren that the version with speed on the rear is a good thing. _________________ Dennis

It looks to me like they are trying to make the camera less visible. If you aren't exceeding the speed limit (which is the majority of the time) then I presume it doesn't flash up a warning so you might not even notice it.
Then again, if you are speeding then it does give you a warning that it's time to slam on the brakes. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Stargate - when I get to be 118, all the oil will run out and there will be no electrics and all the cameras will stop working.
But Bill Gates will still make us pay because he will own all the satellites watching over us. _________________ Dennis

Passed this camera again last week. I notice that the post has something like "testing only" in vertical lettering. Was that always there? _________________ Jock

I went and had another look at that camera yesterday.
It certainly does say "Testing only" vertically down the back of the post. It also now (confusingly) has a big "Truvelo" sticker on the front of the post, and I'm pretty sure that the camera installed in the box is now totally different.
Also the extra post and box 10 yards nearer the traffic lights seems to be a flash-gun rather than an IR illuminator (looks rather like those strobe lights you got at 1970's discos). |
