I have noticed that when I run a demo or when i do a trip the scrolling is ever so slightly jerky if you get my drift. Is this normal or should it run silky smooth??If it should run silky smooth how do i get it to do so? I have 42mb of room left on my memory card (Ive only put cameras and liz whitaker on it since Ive had it.
Any help advice appreciated, I thank you all.
My sat nav is a tomtom1 v2...and I think I have posted this in the wron area...can someone move it to the tomtom area please?

I think it's a bit jerky on all of them. There have been discussions about whether the new models are actually a bit jerkier than the old ones, or if different software versions have helped or made it worse.
Mine seems to make about 24 screen updates in 10 seconds (that was on a demo at 100% on a straight bit of road. That's a Go300 on v6.52 software.

I think the reason for this is a limitation of the processor power in your unit.

If you're driving a route for real, let's say Southampton to London, it could take you the best part of 2 hours (depending on traffic and exactly where your destination is) - this would give your unit plenty of time to process ALL of the data and display the route clearly and smoothly.

If you're running a demo or manually scrolling, then you're expecting all of this to be processed much more quickly, but with the image on the screen appearing just as clearly as if you were driving a route.

Another example could be that your TomTom holds all of the software and mapping information internally and is able to re-route etc (if you go wrong) so quickly that it's calculated a new route before you realise your error. However, if you have a unit (like many built-in systems in cars) which runs the maps off DVD, you could be a good half mile down the road before a route is recalculated.

Unfortunately, there are limits to what GPS units can do and I think (hope) you'll find that when you get used to using the system, features like demo won't be needed and as you use the TomTom on a real route, you'll forget all about any scrolling issue.

Perhaps you could see if my theory is right by running the same demo in 2D and 3D map modes - there's less information to process in the 2D mode and you might find that it runs more smoothly (scrolling may also be smoother).

For what you get in the box, these GPS units do a hell of a lot and you have get forgive some of their weaknesses.

I think the display is pretty jerky anyway, particulary on roundabouts.

Don't get the wrong, for the money the TT One is great value, this is just a minor critisism as far as I'm concerned & would probably be rectified if I wasn't too tight to buy a more expensive model!

The slow to update and inaccurate GPS engine is what causes problems at roundabouts. Civilian GPS is only accurate to within 10 meters or so. This means that the software hasn't really got a clue which way you are going until you start going in a fairly straight line. Tomtom cheats slightly in that it expects you to follow the route you have planned.

Try planning a route then intentionally go in another direction than suggested by the software at a roundabout and see how far you get before the software realizes you aren't actually going where you are supposed to be going.

As always safe driving and keep your eyes on the road and let your passenger watch the effects of your actions for you!! Laughing Laughing
