I get happier by the minute with my AytoBe. Best £93 my daughter has ever spent on a present for me Smile

A good discussion! We can always spend more money on a better or more versatile machine but I enjoy the DIY aspects of these machines. The Aytobe seems good value to me and I have managed to get TomTom 6 working on it. A question though, has anyone managed to upgrade to 6.01, 6.02 or even 6.03?

Process Killer - very handy! Use the version with mcf. I managed to kill Malata.

To get the taskbar/start button - use SIPrc keyboard, press Ctrl and Esc, it should pop up then you can change the settings so that it isnt hidden.

Thanks for that, i can now see the task bar but when i kill malata it does go which is good but there is still something showing on the task bar.

How do you do a right-click?

you can just edit the reg to remove malata.exe and change autorun.exe to explorer.exe and it will be as a normal pda after a softboot.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init change delete Launch50 "Malata.exe"
and edit Launch45 "autorun.exe" to "explorer.exe" .

do a soft reboot.

One problem with removing Malata is that keys don't work...

Regarding the Ipaq:

Does anyone know if the Ipaq GPS as LCD display as good or better then the AyToBe? I get 9-12 sats on my AyToBe.

also the CPU is a 400Mhz Samsung cpu and the Aytobe is a Intel 300Mhz PXA255. any problems with software, speed? Could I still use my old software for Intel ARM cpus?

I've double checked and hp ipaq normal selling price is £249, is it discontinued?

wow...If it's really going for over 50% lower, then I'll get one just for work.

How about using the AyToBe as a GPS receiver on your LapTop?

The software you need is all Freeware and listed below:
1) GPS2Blue 1.7
http://users.skynet.be/hofinger/GPS2Blue.html

2) .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=AEA55F2F-07B5-4A8C-8A44-B4E1B196D5C0&displaylang=en

4) Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 (only tested on this version)

5) HW VSP
http://www.hw-group.com/products/hw_vsp/index_en.html#download

Install Active Sync on Laptop (if not already using it)

Install .NET 2.0, but does not start via ActiveSync, you need to copy the .cab over and install that way.

Install Gps2Blue on AyToBe.
Settings: IP should be 192.168.55.101, remote: 192.168.55.100.
tick TCP/IP. GPS is on COM6 at 9600. Click "On" to start.

Install HW VPS on Laptop. Settings: Select(settings tab): HW VP work as the TCP Server only.
Unselected(settings tab): Don't create VSP Port if Ping to
remote device failed.
in VSP tab: IP: 192.168.55.101(your IP) Port: 31873
Port name: COM5 or any free port name. Server Port: 31873.

Theses settings work both on my Laptop and Desktop pc, running Windows XP SP2.

Make sure you always install software to MMC_Storage. Good idea to make a folder called Program Files.

I`d been using my laptop with a Garmin GPSr for satnav but found it cumbersome in the car. The A2B does a much better job.

Is it possible for TCPMP to play WMV movies? What codec/whatever do I need?

It does support windows media audio and video files, but I it requires the codecs from Windows Media for it to work. I have not found a download for it yet.

I'm using the same player, and just test a 700MB .mpg video, and worked well.

700MB? I bet that took forever to transfer! I`m setting it up to be an autocue for my sax playing. I`ve made some movies that display the sheet music and play backing but I used the Windows Movie Maker that only outputs to WMV afaik. I suppose I could convert to mpg but it would be simpler if TCPMP played WMV. I`ll work it out.
