Just last night I past some official looking ladies, in official looking flourecent waist coats, with an official looking speed gun, and an official looking sign saying (Comunity Speed Control Area) in Windlesham. Any ideas as to how official that might be?
This was there once before as someone put a mobile camera location there!
More importantly are we going to have to report every Tom, Dick, and Harry with an official looking speed gun for the database????

They are official in the sense that they are supported by the local authority but they have no powers to sanction motorists.
The idea is that it makes motorists more aware of their speed. Also offenders VRN's may be noted and passed to police but all they can do is give the motorist a verbal warning. They'd only be likely to do this if the speed was very excessive I'd imagine. _________________ Darren Griffin |

In that case, database users would probably appreciate the warning! Sould I report this one? _________________ Dom

We have decided not to include these. There is no risk of prosecution and as such we have to draw the line some place . If they become official mobile sites or a fixed camera is installed then OK but until then no. _________________ Darren Griffin

Having being 'caught' by one of these (clocked doing 38 in 30 limit) my wife (for I was in her car!!) got a very official looking letter from the police warning her that she could face prosecution next time. At first glance it looked very much like you had picked up a £60 fine. I go much slower through that village now - so I guess it worked. _________________ Phil |

I think its a case of lack of evidence, two ladies in official looking matching outfits just doesn't stand up in court. However I can understand why they do it, and great if they get it to work, Windlesham is one hell of a rat run for commuters, most in too much of a rush.
I take it you didn't own up to being the driver seeing that it wasn't official!
Still, (No Camera, No Database). _________________ Dom

I'm a bit on the fence with this one, but I might make myself unpopular by saying:
if the purpose of this exercise is to reduce speed, would it not be more community spirited of PGPSW to include these sites in the database so the members are more likely to observe the prescribed speed limited
I have my bags packed and passport at the ready to leave the country when the **** hits the fan with this one

The emphasis is on the camera. Recorded illegal activity.
...and they would have to re brand the whole website, database, company image, job descriptions. (speed camera datadase)
So, where were you flying to, mabye I see you there on my hols. _________________ Dom

Flying - who mentioned flying, I would expect boat travel to be more appropriate - Mike |

OK, I'll take the slow boat to China - probably locked in one of those containers and keeping my mouth firmly shut...
...but, in the meantime, what if one day it's a police officer rather than a member of the public standing there with a speed camera and the location isn't registered on the database? Seeing how they like to 'target' motorists, it wouldn't be too hard for them to do this because they'll have plenty of data (official or otherwise) indicating the number of motorists travelling above the prescribed speed limit. |

Fair, point once the location IS being used by the Police to target speeding motorists then the location can be submitted, until it is known as an active location it will not form part of the database, even when submitted it is subject to verification - Mike |

Mike,
Good point - the database could easily become too large and difficult to manage by entering all these locations.
How is a camera location verified?
I submitted some changes late(ish) yesterday and the map had been updated by this morning.
...very impressive, but I was surprised that somebody could verify these corrections so quickly |

We use a variety of methods including physical verification and weighting. If a number of unique reports are received concerning a site then that may score high enough to have the ammendment/addition added without verification. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I'd make two guesses at this one ..
1. Maybe somebody else had already submitted them and they had already been verified - therefore the apparent speed of accepting your changes was pure coincidence.
2. Maybe you were the last to report the changes, being one of several members who did so - note that Darren says they do weighting. _________________ Dennis
