You wouldn't expect a discount on an AA Road Atlas if it was superseded shortly after you had bought a copy and this really is no different.

I disagree....you know what your buying with an AA, or any other shop bought map...i.e 2006 or 2007 or2008. I wouldn't go into a shop in December and come out with a 2007 map, knowing that 2008 is just around the corner. |

TomTom should fall into line.
Just my opinion, feel free to shoot. |
As is often stated, maps aren't software, they are data. TomTom regularly provide free software updates. _________________ Tim |

You don't honestly believe that do you? Do you think TeleAtlas give [insert manufacturer here] the new map data? Do you think that manufacturer can customise and compress that data and make it available to users with zero cost?
Sure it can be done but then the product will cost £300 instead of £200 and we'll start moaning once more.
At then end of the day many systems have no map update option at all! _________________ Darren Griffin

I bought a new TomTom One on 04/04/2007 (a fortnight ago). If I'd waited a few weeks I could of saved myself £40+.
Are TomTom giving free updates if units have only just been bought, or what happens if you buy one today, they shops will have units with the old maps installed.

Surely there is some way of reporting these changes to Navtec/Teleatlas etc so they can be check out? |

Indeed there is. Both Navteq and Teleatlas have an on-line reporting system. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Does it finally include the IOM - there is one PDA version that does - but on every other version it is just an expanse of green |

O sorry for getting your dander up but as others have said you would not buy a ’06 paper map in December. Can T.T. not be upfront and say map are issued 3 times a year. And how about a copy to browse on the web site to see if it is relevant for you. Or would that be more use to the customer than T.T. |

But when it does, you'll be pleased to know there's a pgpsw 30mph speed camera there which shows up already. _________________ Dennis

I take on board the fact that the map that I purchased a couple of months ago for 50-ish quid (v. 6.5) may work as well as the one just released, but TT presumably didn't have the new maps delivered unexpectedly one morning.
A message stating: 'Are you sure you want to buy this map, there's a new one just around the corner?' would be very welcome (and not cost them anything, after all I shall probably not buy this latest version but wait for the next one). |

And how much of an update is this then ... I asked TomTom about the Isle of Man and Southern Ireland ... their reply ...
"The Isle of Man is not covered on the new maps; however it does include the Map of Ireland"
I then asked to what level of detail is Southern Ireland covered ...
"A greater level of detail than was previously available"
Which actually tells me nothing - they might have added one road and that would satisfy the above statement
Jesus with them it is like pulling teeth ... |

I strongly agree with the statement "bits is bits".
Whether a product is essentially data (i.e. maps) or software code it would seem entirely fair and reasonable to provide free (i.e. included in the cost) updates for a specified time (6 - 12 months seems about right). This would then stop the entirely reason complaints from people who bought the products last week. TomTom in the past have been quite happy to sell products with old maps (as in 5 months after the new maps had been available) - they caught me out with that.
Since everybody wants the latest maps (generally) why don't TomTom et al provide a subscription service where you pay for a 12 month update service? I am sure that many people would pay £50 or so per year for all the latest maps rather than agonising when to upgrade. It is a simpler pricing model which would stop one of the main issues that users have and probably increase TomToms revenues as well. Surely a win-win situation? |
