unfortunately garmin don't always seem to respond to queries via email - only faults etc. the best bet is to phone them - it's free! even at busy times i've only had to wait about 10-15 minutes - just stick the phone on speaker-phone and listen to the nice music :D

Hey all,
Check out the post I just wrote up. I had the Loading Maps lockup, and I managed to fix it WITHOUT sending the unit back to Garmin. Here's how I did it. Hopefully, it works for you too.

Good luck!!!!

With the help of the above and others on this site I managed to get back to a state of booting up and getting my 360 working on V2.40 - accepting the suggested update to version 3.60 took me right back to square one - freeze/shutdown at the 'maps loading stage. After going through the process once more and getting the unit working again on version 2.40, I tried all other suggesting methods of updating to V 3.60 (including deleting the poi files and a manual upgrade) to no avail. Just before all this had happened though I had made a complete backup about a week ago of all my Nuvi files so at the time of writing I am copying the 'Garmin' folder from my PC back onto the 'Garmin' folder on the Nuvi. There's still over an hour to go so I'll let you know how I get on. Fingers crossed! |

Nope, still the same - asking me if I want to update from Current version: 2.40 to New version: 3.60. If I choose no, I can use the damn thing, if I choose yes, I know it will freeze again. Any idea's?? |

YEEEHAAAAAA!!
Cracked it! :D :D :D :D
I started it up again, chose NO to update and got it working on version 2.40.
Went to the Garmin website, manually downloaded the 3.60 update from here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downloadsDetails.jsp?id=1847&product=010-00538-00&cID=134&pID=6291#Instruct
Connected my nuvi and installed the update. It then told me to disconnect my Nuvi, switch on and choose YES to update to V 3.60 which I did. The Nuvi then switched itself off and I thought 'Oh fiddlesticks' (or words to that effect ), After about 15/20 seconds and while I was counting to ten before flinging the thing across the room, it started up, loaded up and now appears to be working fine. I don't know why that didn't work earlier when I tried the manual update - I think I may have tried switching it on again when it first shutdown and stopped the updating procedure. I've switched it off and on several times since and its all working as it should. Hopefully thats it and my experience helps someone else out. I've no doubt that my troubles were caused by loading more than 257 POI's though so I must pay attention and read the warnings in future BEFORE installing anything else!
The most annoying thing though? That the Garmin helpdesk basically said to me that I had installed corrupted software, the repairs would not be carried out under warranty and I would have to send it to them and pay a fixed fee of £149 to get it fixed. From what I've read on this site, its a fairly common problem and they could have easily told me the fix.
Shame on them - I'll certainly take their attitude into consideration when I eventually upgrade my equipment! |

Glad to see it worked for you! I've now reloaded over 150,000 POI's, but this time, I made sure I stayed well under the 257 category limit, and no problems. Also, I loaded the POIs onto a SD card instead. That way, if it had frozen, I could just pop the card out. But it's working great now!

Thanks for that advice mate. I think I'll try the SD card method too. Do I need a special card reader/writer or can I just pop a 1GB memory card in the nuvi (which should show up as a drive when I connect the nuvi to my PC) and just choose that drive to write my POI's to in future? |

I'm not entirely sure about the card in the unit. I believe you are correct, and it will show up as another drive letter, and should work fine.
I actually have a card reader on my laptop, so I put the SD card in there, and then the POI Loader recognized it as a potential drive to install the POIs to (in fact, I didn't even have the Nuvi connected to the computer). That's the way I did it, and it works great.
Good luck and enjoy your working Nuvi again!! |
