Looking to buy a satnav. I quite like the TT 910, but notice it doesn't appear to include current road speed in the specs.
Am I right, or should I be looking to a different manufacturer?
TIA

to the forum.
Yes, almost all GPS devices display actual speed including the TT910.
If in doubt download the manual from TT It'll tell you in there.
To be honest unless you need it for some specific reason, I find that feature of gps devices to be no more than a curiosity and rarely used. _________________ Dom

Thanks mostdom for replying.
I'm not particularly concerned about having it. As you say, it probably wont get used that often, but it seems strange that it's not included in the general specification.
I'll have a look in the manual to see what else they've missed. :-)
Regards.

I use it ALL the time. Driving at steady speed, it is far more accurate than the speedometer. _________________ Dennis

if i read it correctly i think the OP (dennis: OP = "original poster" ;)) means the speed of the road you are on as opposed to your current driving speed? - correct me if i'm wrong
the newer tomtom maps/software have this function but, like their maps, it's innacurate and/or out of date and/or just not there... i'm guessing this is why it's not advertised in the specifications (didn't use 'specs' in case people think we mean average speed cameras!)

Actually you are, but I woudn't worry about it. :-)
I was the one who asked the original question, and I did mean the speed the car was travelling at.
IOW can it give a constant readout of the cars current road speed?
If nothing else it would enable one to check the accuracy of the cars speedo.
After playing with a TT 910 I did find it. Not in the manual, but under the GPS details. At least I found a '0 mph' along with the current lat and long, which prompts me to ask a corollary question.
Can the current speed be shown on the main screen, as it's not there by default?
The 910 manual doesn't seem very clear at explaining how to use all the functions.

Go to change preferences/ status bar preferences and tick the speed check box. This will display current speed and road speed limit (where known, not all roads contain the speed data as yet, and some are wrong). The current speed display is more accurate than the vehicles speedo, but accuracy is best on straight level roads - Mike |

Mick. | Your speedo is NOT accurate - something about construction and use regulations, MUST NOT be slow, can be up to 10% fast (so to be caught speeding at 36mph in a 30mph zone, your speedo must be reading about 40mph).
Change preferences, Status Bar Preferences (experiment with status bar preferences to get what you personally like to see). It will display your speed centre bottom of screen, together with speed limit of road you're on - IF it knows the speed limit. I've just driven about 300 miles Bristol, Luton, Milton Keynes and back with more than half the speed limit shown wrongly - includes a major dual carriageway shown at 30mph. And I happen to know the M5 south from Jct 22 to Jct 30 (50 miles?) shows at 60mph. When it's showing your roadspeed, with a road speed limit available it will show 50/60, that's you doing 50 on a 60mph road. When your speed exceeds the speed limit by about 4mph, that display will turn red and if you go even faster, it'll start to flash red. Very useful EXCEPT the red figures are difficult to distinguish against the dark background screen and EXCEPT that you get rather ****ed off when you're on a 70mph dual carriageway like I was today with the display flashing red 64/30. GRRRR!! Because I want the speed display, I have to put up with it (it's not configurable).
I thought OP was a sort of verbalisational acronym for OAP. 8O
The Isle Of Wight can NOT give any sort of readout. _________________ Dennis

That would annoy me far too much, but your persistance makes you a better man than I. My fortune is just a single speed warning set on my cars speedo set fairly high which keeps my motorway antics below 80. Everything else is just part of the fun of driving. _________________ Dom

Does anyone else find a discrepancy in the tom tom speed and your vehicle speedometer. I'm reading a difference of about 6mph. The tom tom is the lower so which one would you use? |
