(New to site as well. Posted in wrong forum, now copied to here)
3 week old 501 and I dont know what I am doing. Enthusiasticaly downloaded (today) a later version operating system (I think). When it asked if I wanted to install, it followed by telling me not enough space on device.
Frustrated or what.
Then I got clever.
I thought, obviously you need to delete the old one to make space for the new one. So I did. Looked alright to me, new one shown now in right hand box.
Followed instruction to disconnect and reconnect.
No go.
Now I am sitting looking at a back lit but totaly blank screen on my home dock and no ling to my pc.
Tried support, waiting for e-mail Meanwhile still looking at lit blank screen.
(Tried the paperclip in the hole trick which was the only support advice given, but it did nothing.) Cannot even turn it off.
Any ideas? |

If it's SD Card which you have accidently deleted then go HERE and download Recuva, it's a freebie. It worked for me on my Computer hard drive and an SD Card. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Thanks for your replys.
I did make a full back up just prior to the problem, however I am sitting looking at a lit but fully blank screen. I cannot do anything either on the unit or on the pc as it is sending the usb link. I cannot even turn it off!!
I have been advised (this morning) by the service team to use the reset in the bottom, but they obviously did not fully read my request as I had stated that I tried that with no effect.
Lost_Property, you speak of an SD card. Forgive me, I am a truck driver not a computer buff. What is an SD card and what does the recovery do? It sounds as though it may work, if I only understood.
Oldboy, I think it was you suggested re-inserting my CD. That also may work, but question. I have spent countless hours inputting low bridges (you would be amazed how many there are). Will this cause me to lose all my input POIs? (Although I agree they are not much use to me on a non-functioning unit)
Look forward to hearing more from you guys, and thanks again. |

You will need a Card Reader to make the job easier.
Re-installing the software will not remove the POIs. Just point the installation setup in the direction of the Card Reader.
Use 'Safely Remove Hardware' before taking the Card out of the Card Reader to avoid corrupting the writing process.;)
Then try the Card in the 510 again. _________________ Richard

SD Card is the small flat blue plastic thing with tiny terminals at one end. It came in a small flat plastic case and you had to insert it into a slot at the bottom of the 510 as part of the setting up process. _________________ Dennis

Accidently removed SD Card from Bro-in law TT500 today and just as I did so the screen changed to indicate the device was busy. Now there are no files on SD Card. Is it possible to recover from this (I didnt have a backup of his card). Gave him 2GB card with full Euro-map 660.1256 for time being but would like to restore SD Card if possible (only 256MB with UK Map).
Cheers

Did you try the Card to see if it was still working? How far did it get?
There is a Recovery Tool for SD Cards mentioned earlier in this Thread, called Recuva. Might be worth a try.
It could be that only the software has been corrupted, in which case you could try re-installing the software. _________________ Richard

Tried re-installing - couldnt install.
Tried recuva but no files on disk. (Disk almost full though!)
Formatted Card and re-installed - now OK but lost all files (of course).
Dont have UK only map to fit onto his 256MB card - and no backups.
Gave him 2GB Card with full EU map for now.
Still dont know where all the files went to on his card.

They were still probably there, but the if the File Allocation Table was corrupted it would have no chance.
Might be a good time to have a word with TT on 0845 1610009, with the purchase details handy. Monday 08:00 hours would be the best time, before they get really busy.
The unfortunate lesson learnt here is, never take the card out while the Device is switched on. _________________ Richard

Cheers Oldboy
Since it is bro-in-law he can keep 2GB card and all software updates.
Bought new Sandisk Ultra III as a replacement.
Didnt realise the device was still active - still lesson learnt thou I never bother as I have plenty of my own backups to fall back on.
Cheers,

Got working!
As I could not turn it off, I let the battery run out then charged it for 24 hours.
A miracle, it came on.
Still would not work properly, but at least it was talking to the computer so was able to restore previous back up.
Now ok again.
Thank for all your advice, I appreciate it. |

If I read this right, you now only have one map between the two of you?
Will make life difficult if you ever need help from TomTom, get an upgrade map offer, or want to use TomTom "Home". |
