Hi guys
I have just got hold of an XDA Orbit and really rate it by the way.
I am looking to install my Tom Tom Navigator 5 software onto the device but tom-tom are not supporting TT5 with XDA Orbit......o2 say go speak with tom-tom, groan.
Can anyone here tell me if tt navigator 5 will run successfully on my XDA Orbit? :D
If its a yes then can they please post up the full install procedure for me as I am a bit fikk in it? For example will I need the windows mobile 5 update from the tt site yarder yarder yarder. 8O
Really would appreciate your help..........or should i just run with co-pilot (which i will need to buy at discounted price) in spite of being a big TT5 fan.
Thanks in advance for all the help you are about to give |

Yes it will work, I would get the update from TomTom's web site so you start with version 5,21
Install that to the device and activate your map.
Fot the GPS side of things use other NMEA GPS Device, Baud rate 9600, com port 4 and you should be up and running - Mike |

mikealder thanks for your speed of reply and clarity.
One point if i may, am I right in thinking that I do not use my original tt5 CD......in stead I should download the update from tom-toms site as seen here: http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=3361&Lid=1
and install this via active sync straight onto the micro sd card in my orbit. Then I should install all of my maps
and then boot up tom-tom 5 for the first time on my xda orbit and sort out the GPS settings.
I assume I can load all speed camera data bases after via POI edit?
Again thanks |

Now i am getting in a pickle because tom-toms site says:
Is this update meant for me?
This update can ONLY be used when you have already installed a registered version of TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 on your Pocket PC/Palm OS device.
Can I install my registered version of tt5 from the cd onto the xda orbit, activate it.......and then install this update? |

I would install the application from the update your link was for, the update is a full copy of the application and doesn't require the previous version installed first (in fact installing the update over an existing installation can cause problems), then install the map, voice and postcode files from the CD, activate the map and you will be up and running.
Just because a device isn't listed as compatable doesn't mean it won't work, TomTom version 6 works on the Artemis and is pre-installed on that device, I doubt you will have any problems getting vs5 working on the Orbit - Mike |

It was the above statement that really allowed my penny to drop, thanks for that, all is crystal clear. |

This simply is not working for me.
I install the update from tom-toms website, then go to install the maps and end up with this:
No matter which way I play it, same old same old ! ! !
I wanna cry
Make me happy once more please ! ! ! |

But you are trying to install TomTom Naviagtor 5 which does not require the use of the Home application (vs6 onwards) - you should simply run the downloaded application from Here on the PC with the device docked via Active Sync.
You can then install a map to the device using a card reader and Windows Explorer, or try copying the map data to the device from the PC (not recommended - but it does work) - Mike |

Hi Mike
Thank you for your kind assistance this evening. I now have my tom-tom navigator 5 running very smoothly on my XDA Orbit. Maps work, voices work and full post codes work.
I had just about given up on this and was preparing myself to shell out another £100 on tom-tom 6.....................but you saved me the trouble.
I am now a very happy bunny
Again many thanks |

I installed tomtom navigator 5 on my xda orbit and it was working fine, only problem was home / recent locations were not saved. I have now upgraded to tomtom nav 6 and it seems to work fine with home and favourites.
Hope that helps. |

I have now upgraded to tomtom nav 6 and it seems to work fine with home and favourites. | If you had asked why this was the case we could have given you the answer, in the map folder on the memory card is a file Great_Britain-Map.cfg you needed to copy that file to the PC, right click it and select properties, de-select the Read Only check box, then copy the file back to the memory card map folder (Posted for the benefit of others).
The other often found reason for this occuring is the read/ write switch on the memory card being selected to Lock, as this is only found on SD cards it will not have been the cause in this instance - Orbit uses Trans Flash card.
The big benefit using TT6 is the extra allowance for custom POI categories, in version 5 you are limitted to 39 with version 6 this increases to 100, otherwise the two applications are very similar in appearance, of course if your maps are not upto date this might also be a very valid reason to update - Mike |
