I have become more and more annoyed with TomTom, the longer I use it.
Does anyone have any idea how old the UK maps really are?

On my Palm I have SWI Mapviewer 2, which came out early in 2002 and it also uses TeleAtlas maps.

There are feature that appear on the Palm, but not in TT2.
e.g. North of M20 Junction 9 is a Business Park (Eureka Entertainment Park, Ashford, Kent TN25 4BN).
This has been there for at least 3 years, the Palm shows the earliest extension north of the roundabout, which has been around for a long time, but TT2 shows nothing.

The TTNav2 maps (for PPC) are of December 2002 vintage.

I thinks its about time the maps were updated, even if it included a dec 2003 refresh, this would assist most.

Hopefully they will get the uk maps updated and offer a direct download to current ttnv2 users, i think at least 1 update per year (if needed) would be good, think they should going by the price of the software etc.

Cheers
Nick

Don't get your hopes up. I think an upgrade to TTNav 3 will be your only option for getting hold of newer map data. We have discussed the economics many times before and the simple answer is that there is no scope for free updates in the cost of the software. OEM Car systems charge upwards of £200 per disc for new map data. Given that PPC Nav systems cost a lot less than that you can see the problem. If TomTom or any other provider were to offer map updates to users at 80% of the cost of the full software how many do you think would take up the offer instead of buying the latest upgrade?

Hi Darren,
Thats a valid point :D

Is there an upgrade fee, or is it another £115 etc for the new version with updates.? (when it comes)

Cheers

Going on past experience with TomTom1 there will likely be an upgrade path for existing owners. Upgrading from v1 to v2 TomTom required you to return the v1 CD as proof of ownership.

I can't recall the excat figures but it was a significant discount over buying teh full product and you get the bonus of some additional features as well as newer maps Smile

The upgrade from version 1 to version 2 was a very reasonable 39 Euros per country you had - I can't remember whether that was plus P&P or with P&P included.

There was no European map set on version 1, so there's no previous history as to upgrade costs there.

As Darren said, you did have to return the original version 1 CD to TomTom - but version 1 didn't use activation. I wouldn't be surprised if upgrades from version 2 work by asking you to input your activation code as proof of purchase, rather than returning CDs.

It's possible that the version 3 upgrade may be a retail product that you buy from your favourite dealer - it could ask you to input both the activation code of your version 2 product and the upgrade activation code from the packaging of the version 3 upgrade.

Even if you have to order the upgrade directly from TomTom, they may go for asking for both your version 2 code and version 3 activation code to be input. This way, they can do various things to prevent the (probably outside the licence agreement of the upgrade) transfer of the old software - such as refusing new activations of version 2 and only allowing you to reactivate devices you'd already activated with version 2 before upgrading.

There's some expensive software out there that uses the upgrade serial number approach - VERITAS Backup Exec is one. If you buy an upgrade, you get the same box as a full version, though it's festooned in stickers telling you that the product inside the shrink-wrap is an upgrade version. If you have the old version installed, you run the new installer and input the serial number from the card inside the upgrade box. It recognises your old version, picks up the serial number(s), and generates your full serial number(s) for all modules that the upgrade is valid for - then proceeds to uninstall the old version, upgrade your settings and install teh new version. Most Backup Exec upgrades are family upgrades - they upgrade not only the core product but all add-ons from a set range of previous versions.

If you no longer have the old product installed, or you can't install the old product (for example if it's not compatible with the version of Windows on the machine you're trying to use), you phone VERITAS sales with the code(s) you're trying to upgrade. The nice thing is that they'll confirm from those code(s) before you break the shrink-wrap on the upgrade kit that you have the right upgrade kit, so you're not left with an expensive opened software package you can't use. You can then break into the package whilst you're on the phone, read them the code from the upgrade kit and they'll then give you your new code(s) immediately.
