On the new Navteq maps the track across the sand from Claddaghduff to Omey Island in Connemara, which is passable for only a couple of hours either side of low tide, is shown, and the i3 directs you across it.
I'm waiting for complaints from the media that people have lost their cars because satnavs have made them drive into the sea! _________________ Anita

It isn't only Germans who blindly follow their sat-nav's instructions to turn onto a railway line. This is from my local paper today:
Quote: | Motorist drove onto railway line
Trains had to be delayed for an hour when a woman drove onto a railway line and then blamed the satellite navigation system in her car.
The 52-year-old from Dorking, Surrey, was waiting at a level crossing in Pevensey, East Sussex, when she claims the device told her "to turn left". She then drove her Ford Fiesta onto the track, blocking two lines, British Transport Police (BTP) said. Tuesday evening's trains between Brighton and Hastings were delayed.
The woman told police she turned onto the track "because my sat-nav device told me to" a BTP spokeswoman said. She added that the driver had been reported for obstructing the railway and driving without due care and attention. She will be summonsed to court to explain her actions.
Police are also making inquiries with the sat-nav company about the error. |

I think all systems should ask the question on startup "If this Sat Nav told you to drive off a cliff, would you?" and if they answer yes then it would switch off again. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I trust you've sent that suggestion to all the manufacturers, Skippy. _________________ Anita

actually, if you answer 'yes' it should direct you to a cliff... at least there'd be one less idiot on the road! |

Skippy, could you liaise with MaFt over this, as I think his modification to the end result is an improvement on your original design. _________________ Anita

on my boat satnav it quite clealry says when u switch it on.. "do not use this devcie as your sole means of navigation"
perhaps road versions should say this as well.. i am surprized they dont if only to cover legal apects..
less knowledgable people will put too much faith in them.. i would assume a "do not trust this device" to be legally neccessary to covers the makers tracks..
after all silly people do buy the things to give them valid directions.. to expect such people to know when to ignore the device and when not to is asking a little too much in my opinion..
i think the warning should be there..
