|
|
At the moment I am running TT3 on my 2210 and I have been thinking about upgrading both. I was originally thinking about an HX4700 but as it's discontinued I looked at other possibilities and the XDA Exec and variants look to be ideal. It would also mean that I could get rid of my mobile as I always have my PDA with me.
I like the idea of being able to run TT in landscape, plus reading documents is far easier this way. On the downside I notice that there is no CF slot and I seem to remember that there were issues when running TT from SD cards although this could have just been a problem with the 2210.
Is the XDA Exec a good choice and will TT6 install and run without any problems? |

The Exec is listed as a compatable device on TomTom's web site so it will work, TomTom software works fine from an SD card, but get a good quality high speed card from a reputable supplier.
The Exec as a phone is a large cumbersome heavy device, its good for mobile internet access, but in use I found the phone often difficult dropping connections etc, I prefer the newer smaller devices TBH, if you have the option of the XDA Orbit give that a good loking at as the GPS unit is built in - Mike |

Hi Mike
The main reason I like the XDA Exec is because of its large size and the keyboard. The built in phone was a bonus so if it didn't work that well I would just keep the one I've got.
I was thinking that a fast Kingston card would be a way round it. What is the largest size it will take?

Andy I know the Exec works fine with a 2GB card and others have reported using a 4GB card working on other forum groups. The reason I mention the size is it often puts off people as a phone, but as a mobile internet device it is great, one other consideration is the battery - when connected up using the higher speed UMTS internet connection the device is capable of (network range dependent) it hammers the battery. You will need a GPS reciever (Bluetooth only) and a decent car cradle to hold it in place (have a look at Brodit) - Mike |

Hi Mike
I already have a bluetooth receiver so no problem there. I have a Freelander so it would sit nicely in the inset rubber tray on the dash. :D
Thanks for your helpful comments.

I've been using the exec for 12 months and personly have no problems with it as an all purpose device, there are some stability issues but if your feeling brave you can find an upgrade to WM6 (crossbow) on various forums online and i'm finding this to be stable in ways wm5 wasn't.

I've had TT6 Navigator on my O2 XDA Exec for about 4 months now. I love it. I've got the whole package loaded on my 2Gb SD card (mine's a Sandisk Ultra II) and I've had no problems with operation at all.
I've just downloaded the latest speed cameras and voice warnings, that all seems to be fine.
I purchased a hands free which mounts on the windscreen, this helps to hear instructions as it has a loudspeaker, mine also has a cable to charge the GPSR. Make sure if you buy one of these that it includes a microphone as the one I originally purchased didn't and plugging anything into the combined headphone/mic port disables the microphone.
You can receive incoming calls when TT is loaded, but have to exit from TT to make calls (although I think you can make calls to POIs from within the application).
I nearly always forget to set the correct speaker volume and screen orientation before I put the XDA in the hands free. You can set the main unit volume (once) using the volume slider, but you have to exit from TT to set the correct screen orientation.

Thanks for the comments guys. I feel a lot better about getting one now. I very seldom use the phone when driving but I was thinking of getting a Bluetooth headset to use with it as it's so bulky. I could then leave it in my pocket and still use the phone. The only drawback is looking like an extra from Star Trek.

You can start a call when in tomtom by pressing the green button on the spine of the screen, thats if you can get to it.
Also you can always install PHMbuttons this will let you bind a screen rotate funtion to a hard button so you can flip the screen orientation while your in TT6 i've been doin' this for ages and i forget to change the screen before i start TT as well.

Thanks for your reply. I can't get at the green button when my PDA is in the cradle. I don't really need to make any calls when I'm driving anyway so it's not a real problem
I'll have a look at PHM buttons
Cheers

A good place to look for anything related to these bits of kit is http://www.xda-developers.com after reading a lot on there you'll be able to do almost anything you want with your Exec |
