A family member has bought a Garmin 660 for Xmas.
I'm used to the iQue and 60CSX and all the old models.
I have failed to find the facilities that I require in a GPS within the 660!
Can anyone please confirm that I am not an idiot!
1-Can you plan a route in MapSource on the PC and transfer it to the unit?
2-How many routes can be saved within the unit[whether transferred or planned on the unit]?
3-How many via points can be added to the route?
4-Can tracks be saved on the unit?
5-Can tracks be transferred back to the PC and MapSource?
6-At what zoom level do POIs appear?
Thanks for reading.
Please help if you can. :D |

Quote: | 6-At what zoom level do POIs appear? | Depending on firmware version, and the exact status of the unit - some (one or more) may or may not appear on the normal map screen. You can safely assume for general purposes that they do not and will not appear (although the odd one or two may occur depending on the status...)
Oh, and by the way, it's not you - it's the new Garmin interface for SatNav units, which has a lot less customisation and control than the dedicated GPS units to allow less problems for the average user. TomTom has done something similar too over the years. |

Thank you for your replies.
I feel much happier knowing that it was not my lack of ability! :D
For a 'new model' it has so few of the features that I need from a GPS unit!
A Happy New Year to you! |

No, it's not the same - although a route is made up of waypoints, there is a facility within MapSource to send the route to the GPS unit - although MapSource can successfully send all the waypoints to the GPS, you will not end up with a ready made route on the GPS (like other Garmin models support). |

This is a post i made on another site with the reasons why I return my Nuvi 660......
I have been surfing this site for some time and thought I would share with you the reason why I returned my Nuvi 660
1. Unable to view POI all the time whilst in use.
2. Map was too jerky
3. Method for installing POI's should be more simplistic (Not overwriting existing POI's)
4. POI images too small (except built in cameras)
5. My own Custom POI's shown as dots
6. No real itinerary option
7. No mapping software included with the purchase of a medium/top end unit
Overall I have to say I did think it was a superb unit, very feature packed, but I have decided to wait and see if any upcoming firmware upgrade will resolve some of the unit’s short comings.
There seems to be a general consensus that the unit has been dumbed down and I have to agree.
I currently have TOMTOM on my Nokia Phone and Ipaq PDA so I think I can wait a little longer.
I want too re-iterate again the Nuvi 660 is good, the Nuvi range is good (I have brought the Nuvi 360 for my partner xmas present) but as a power user I would have preferred for the extra features to be added via a separate menu for those of us who like total control and would prefer configurable unit similar to some of the options in the Tomtom Range...... |

My family member with the new 660 with v9 maps for the whole of Europe applied for the DVD to Garmin at Romsey!!!
Here is the reply:-
Quote: | Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
The MapSource application is used for several purposes, the main one
being to transfer mapping from your PC onto a Garmin unit. The reason
why the Nüvi did not come supplied with this software is because the
mapping is all preloaded so there is no need to transfer any other
mapping. You can also use MapSource to create and save waypoints to
certain units as well as routes (you cannot save routes onto a Nüvi).
You can purchase MapSource Trip and Waypoint manager which will allow
you to plot waypoints on a basic map, but you cannot get the detailed
mapping from the unit and use it in MapSource. It is not possible to
purchase/download the mapping that is on your nüvi and then use it on
your PC as this version of mapping only comes supplied with certain
units.
If you wanted to purchase this software (Trip and Waypoint Manager) then
the Garmin part number is: 010-10215-04 RRP £22.52.
Thank you for contacting customer support at Garmin Europe. If you have
any more questions, please don't hesitate to contact us again. |
