I have just bought a TT one new version and must say I'm quite pleased with the unit itself. I have also joined PocketGPSworld (obviously!!) and downloaded the speed camera database which is superb.
However I find the positioning and sheer size of the car charger cable to be a real pain. I'm sure it works fine in some cars but because it sticks out the bottom of the unit (rather than the back which would be more sensible) the unit will not sit neatly at the bottom of the windscreen resting on the dashboard. This means you have to have it positioned halfway up the windscreen which is obtrusive to say the least.
Does anyone know of a company that makes (or could make up) a slimline USB to car charger cable that doesn't protrude from the bottom of the unit as much? - or does anyone have any better ideas!

That might do it but not quite what I was thinking of!
Anyone know of any companies that sell different versions of the USB car charger cable? |

USB car charger cable??????
New one on me !!!!!
There is a USB cable & there is a car charger cable
USB handles PC data connection
Didn't think this charged TT's tho'
Even my 710 needs a home charger connecting to the dock.
The V3 motorola USB data cable certainly fits my 300 data connector.
But that is a data cable.
It doesn't charge it as far as I recall, & I've used it a lot.
Seems there is always something new to learn every day! |

I see. The USB lead plugs into a car adaptor with a USB socket in it....
The USB cable IS the Car cable....
That's crazy, but I guess it's a 1 lead fits ONE situation.... 8O
Told you there was something new to learn everyday.
Thanks Andy |

Does anyone know if TomTom provide a "standard" USB charge cable? My son says it won't charge his Motorola phone, which has a "standard" USB connection and a cable that charges through a PC; he doesn't have a car USB charger for the phone, and is trying not to buy one...
I thought all USB devices had to work to the USB specifications, so I would have expected it to work...
This is for a GB New Edition as a Christmas present... (which is now 20% cheaper, but such is life!) |

Hi,
Contrary to Andy's earlier picture (and what is shown in the manual) my recently purchased TomTom ONE Regional (Great Britain) actually came with two separate leads, one for connecting the unit to a PC, and the other with a 'hard wired' car plug.
I am sure I read somewhere (on this forum I think) that a Motorola Razr (or similar) charger, with a 5v output could be used to charge a 'One', so I would have thought that the reverse would also work OK.
As I was looking for a separate mains charger, I have just ordered (from gizoo.co.uk) a very neat little plug, which accepts a USB cable, and which is actually intended for use with ipods, but does say that it will charge any similar 5v USB type device.
More news on this when it arrives!

THIS TOPIC may be of interest to pension, and his original query. Refers to a Nuvi USB charger with a right angled socket which should also be compatible with the One V2. |

5v output sounds right to me as long as it's fused to 2A. |

I think that if a properly designed unit says it charges via USB it has to conform to the USB specs re. charging current etc. which is only 500mA, so and USB spec PSU should be OK.
From Wikipedia:
Quote: | Power supply
The USB specification provides a 5 V (volts) supply on a single wire from which connected USB devices may draw power. The specification provides for no more than 5.25 V and no less than 4.35 V between the +ve and -ve bus power lines.
Standard devices
Initially, a device is only allowed to draw 100 mA. It may request more current from the upstream device in units of 100 mA up to a maximum of 500 mA. In practice, most ports will deliver the full 500 mA or more before shutting down power, even if the device hasn't requested it or even identified itself. If a (compliant) device requires more power than is available, then it cannot operate until the user changes the network (either by rearranging USB connections or by adding external power) to supply the power required.
Non-standard devices
A number of devices use this power supply without participating in a proper USB network. The typical example is a USB-powered reading light; fans, mug heaters, battery chargers (particularly for mobile telephones) and even miniature vacuum cleaners are also available. In most cases, these items contain no digitally-based circuitry, and thus are not proper USB devices at all. This can cause problems with some computers—the USB specification requires that devices connect in a low-power mode (100 mA maximum) and state how much current they need, before switching, with the host's permission, into high-power mode.
Mac OS X dialog displayed when the 500mA limit is exceeded:

Sorry, poor typing on the intro of my last post...
Should have read:

Hi,
Further to my earlier post, I only realised today that the USB plug on my TomTom ONE GB car connection cable does in fact terminate in a right angled connection.
What I don't really like about it though, is that the lead then comes out of the right hand side of the TomTom (when mounted on the windscreen). As, I suspect like most folks, I prefer to mount mine quite low down in the bottom right hand corner of the windscreen, this is not really ideal, as my cigarette lighter socket is in the middle of the vehicle.
I wonder if the Nuvi USB charger mentioned above, also suffers from the same problem?... I suspect that it might!
