Hello,

Recently purchased a Mio C250. Reasonably happy with it apart from the POIs.

Compared to a friend's Garmin, the Mio's POIsare very scarce indeed. I live in Wiltshire and apparently the only nearest shops to me are Partco Autoparts LTD and Harrods. Also the nearest car park to me is over 10 miles away in the city of Bath.

Does anyone else have these issues? Does anyone know if MIO will release an update to fix this?

Regards,

Lump.

I think you will have to wait quite a while for Mio to release an update. However it is possible to add them yourself with a bit of effort. See this thread for details of free POI downloads:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=50203

and the last couple of pages of the "POI import in C710" thread for info on how to install them (it's just a few topics down the page from here). The method is the same for your C250.

Thanks Sallann,

I've tried this, but it crashed ("fatal error have to reboot" when entering Mio Map). The IGO db size is 6MB is this too large? (Took a while to choose all of the icons!) Luckily I had a backup of the orginal db!

That is a seriously large database for such a small unit with limited memory. Do you really need all those items? Even if you can get it to work I think it will have a serious impact on the operation of the unit.
I imported 6,000 places into my 710 which gives an iGO.dB size of just 700kB and that takes several seconds to load on start-up.
I would suggest that you start with a very small database, just select one sort of POI to start with and then get more ambitious when you have proved the method.

Thanks Sal,

OK, ideally I would like the locations of car parks in main UK towns - but I'm having difficulty locating such a POI group, any suggestions?

There are a number of web sites with car parks and garages listed for download. These are usually in TomTom or Garmin format so a good editing program is a must - I use POIEdit. The main issue I have with all of these web sites is that they do not contain as many car parks as that already supplied within the Mio. a simple test is to search for the car parks in your local area on the mio. Count these and tehn truy an locate them in the fiel you download. I live in Reading and can only find 1 car park listed, however, the Mio reports, correctly, all of teh NCp plus the local authority car parks.

List of suggested web sites:

POI explorer - http://inetcom.hu/mick/igo/

POI Edit - http://www.poiedit.com/downloads.htm

POI file sites that I have used in the past:

http://www.poidownload.co.uk/poi/index.php
http://www.poihandler.com/
http://www.tomtomfree.com/singlePOIfile.htm
http://www.nav-poi.com/garmin/index.html
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=POIs

Plus a multitude of others available via google

A good way of testing the qwuality of a POI file is to save it in to Google earth format (POI EDIT) - then import in to google earth. Look at a location you are familar with and check how close the required POIs are to your known reality.

Thanks for the reply, I live in Wiltshire and there doesn't seem to be any native POIs on the Mio for parking in my local towns.

I've dropped an email to my local council asking if they can provide GPS cordinates for car parks under their control. I've had an initial positive response. If they can provide the data I may contact other councils and build up a POI database this way.

I have sent you a PM with a list of the car parks I can find in and around wiltshire.

A good source (if you are up for cutting/pasting/editing) is multimap.

Enter the place you are interested in.

On the top right is a local information drop down.

Select what you are interested in

The site then lists the detial - included in the url is the GPS data - cut and paste this as required.

Alternatively - in firefox you can view page source - this then allows you to cut & paste 25 entries at a time (assuming the site lists 25).

By moving around the map you can then widen your search area etc.
