Just wondering how long it takes for your garmin to decide where it is when you turn it on? Mine takes a good few minutes.
Also does anyone know if an aerial speeds up the 'seek' time? |

About a minute max, depending on power supply being used and surroundings.
Position in car can make a big difference and the type of windscreen. |

Hi ianandrewhay,
I have two i3's mounted on the dashboards of different vehicles.
Both normally take less than a minute to acquire satellites as long as the vehicle is stationary.
If I drive off immediately it can take up to 5 minutes, and I think that atmospherics can sometimes affect the acquisition time and signal strength, especially dull cloudy weather.
I have read elsewhere that the condition of the i3 internal batteries can also affect the length of time it takes to acquire a signal, whether or not the 12v car lead is in use, so if you are having problems it might help to instal some fresh good quality batteries.
Regards,
Robert Swanson

Using cars 12V supply it takes about a min.
I don't use the unit on batteries, and this way the rechargeable batteries keep the charge for weeks on end. |

It doesn't.
Mine with batteries and antenna ~ 20 seconds. It depends on the view you have of the sky (i.e. buildings etc) and the position on the windscreen - lower is better. |

Garmin say it takes 45 seconds from "cold" (ie switched off for more than 12 hours). If it has been switched on in the last few hours then it will get a fix quicker than this.
The main things that could be slowing down your first fix are:
You don't have a very good view of the sky
You are moving along while waiting for a first fix (if the signal gets blocked by a building, tree or other object then it has to start aquiring that satellite again)
You may have a car with a heat reflective windscreen (eg Zafira, Renault or Citroen) in which case you may need an external aerial.
Try switching your i3 on while you are outside the car and see if it gets a fix quicker. This will rule out the possibility of the windscreen causing problems. Bear in mind the hot start/cold start which means the GPS will get a fix much quicker if it has had a fix within the last 6 hours or so. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I found different firmware versions make a big difference to the time it takes to lock onto satellites. With 3.1 it took a good few minutes but now I'm back on 2.7 it locks on within 30-40 secs or so. |
