|
|
Hi,
I just bought TomTom Mobile 5, bundled with its own Bluetooth GPS receiver. Although I plan to use it primarily with my Nokia 9300i, I happen to have a BT-enabled laptop (IBM ThinkPad X31). I can pair the TomTom GPS receiver (shown as "TomTom Wireless GPS MkII") in the ThinkPad BT software, but no services are found for it. Any recommandation as to which Windows GPS software I could use together with the TomTom GPS receiver?
Thanks, Dominique |

I use MS Autoroute 2006 with my TT BT Mk2 receiver without any problems. _________________ Tim |

Hmmm. Apologies for dragging up this antique post but I have the exact same query as the OP, and unlike yours, mine *isn't* working without any problems
Newly-acquired TomTom Mobile 5 on Nokia 6600 works fine with associated TomTom Wireless GPS Mk II. Laptop Bluetooth works fine with 6600. Laptop Bluetooth will not discover GPS (even when phone is not using it). Laptop has both Win2K and WinXP, behaviours are identical. Laptop's Bluetooth adaptor is an oldish fairly anonymous USB adaptor from Expansys which XP recognises as a generic CSR Bluetooth device, and whose original Win2K software I have mislaid so it is currently using XTND BlueManager 3.1c which was recommended somewhere out on t'Internerd (probably in an Expansys forum).
I'm relatively PC literate but Bluetooth is all g(r)eek to me and has been since I initially failed to make it work right between Nokia 6310 and laptop with Nokia suite, so all input will be gratefully received. I'd prefer not to have to buy a new Bluetooth dongle just to make this work, but if that's what it takes, low-cost suggestions are welcome...

My current laptop has built in Bluetooth and has no issues. I'll dig the old one out and try to find a BT dongle to see what happens. _________________ Tim |

Thanks ever so much for the offer, but no desperate need now. You know the way software sometimes starts working when you ask a dumb question in public? Well it happened again. I started the Bluetooth setup again from scratch under Win2K (not for the first time), but this time BlueManager discovered the BTGPS. It still wouldn't tell me things like which ports were assigned, so I downloaded VisualGPS and a quick trial and error found the right port and things then mostly behaved as documented.
Now the only GPSy thing I've got that isn't working right is the GPS connectivity in Autoroute (2001) and I can probably live without that. Autoroute sometimes seems to cause one of the Bluetooth processes to crash (whereas other GPS apps don't), so maybe it's only partly Bill's fault. I think I have had this Autoroute working with an original eTrex GPS on a previous laptop (via serial cable, but this year's laptop has no serial ports - such is progress) so the basics of GPS in that Autoroute are capable of working.
Anyway, suggestions of decent *reliable* alternative Bluetooth software which can legitimately be used with a Cambridge Silicon Radio USB dongle on Win2K are probably what I need next, but for most purposes I'm all set now.
Thanks again. |
