OK the plot thickens. I cleared off the card usnig the card reader, put the blank card in the i3, then tried to download 1 of the areas I had specified before and I get:

======================================
The following map(s) have not been unlocked for your GPS:
"HOUSTON, TEXAS"

Press OK to transfer these maps anyway.
Or, press Cancel to abort the transfer.
======================================

Now this doesn't make any sense. Surely I don't have to unlock the Mapsource CD I got AND any of the areas, if the original software I bought was "City Navigator North America"?

I really want to crack this but I am also toying with the idea of just selling the i3 when I move and getting a Sat-Nav in the USA with the maps already on(!)

This latest message was maybe because you cleared off the ####.unl file from the card.

I had a loo at my orinal Gar,min card and there is a folder called Garmin with 2 fiels and 2 folders. Files are:

GMAPSUPP.IMG
GMAPSUPP.UNL

I assume (sorry have no first-hand) that when you copy maps to a new card it creates these 2 files. Anyone confirm???

I found details for creating a UNL file on the Garmin website: http://www.garmin.com/support/faqs/faq.jsp?faq=265

After creating this file, I copied it not only to the root folder of the new card but also into the Garmin folder that got created when I downloaded maps to it but I still got the same message about unlocking when I tried to download any different maps.

I took a look on my UK card and I can see the files you mention Graham but I have no idea how they get created when you are downloading to a new card.

I also took a look at the file structure after clearing the card completely but leaving the UNL file on there.

It looks like this:

usa.unl
\Garmin\gmapsupp.img

That's it - that's all that was on there.

Then I loaded that card into the Garmin and of course got "Please use the provided PC..." message :x

So next I think I will try a full reset. I follow the procedure:

- Power off
- Hold down all 3 buttons together starting in sequence from the left
- The i3 powers on and asks "Delete All User Data?" or something like that
- i3 power cycles and asks you to input timezone and daylight saving option
- Then you get this message:
"To use this unit, map data must be installed. Installation instructions are located in the enclosed setup guide.

WARNING:
Do NOT connect this nuit to your PC until instructed to do so as explained in the setup guide"

So even a full reset hasn't helped. How many gery hairs do I have to sprout to get this thing working! Evil or Very Mad

I have put a brand new Toshiba 512MB microSD card in my i3 and get the same message "to use this unit, map data ........." just as the post above.

Mapsouce says that the required memory is missing from the device.

Anybody have any ideas how to proceed please?
