TTN 6 Directions Accuracy?

I have only had TTN6 on my Treo 650 a few weeks now. I have been "testing" routing mainly using locations I am fairly familiar with (this is in USA). I have found TT sometimes gives really bizarre routing--wants me to really go out of the way. I can find no reason for this in route pref--have it set to "always fastest". Sometimes obviousl routes are missed, like a major highway going nearly direct to my destination and TT wants me to backtrack through much worse roads which is not only slower, but considerably longer, too. I am wondering what confidence others have in TTN 6 navigating in an unfamiliar area. I am concerned to try this, as I might get totally screwed up. TT does a great job of creating a new route in a few seconds when it realizes I have ignored its route and gone my own way. I then seems to pick up the "better" route--the one I would have picked for myself. I will not always be in the position of knowing more than TT, though (of course-that's why I bought it). Just wondering what others experience is in routing with TT. Thanks.

do have the route planning set to shortest by any chance if so try setting it to fastest
