garmin i3 microsd

I have a garmin i3 with a 256mb microsd with maps preinstalled onto the microsd. Now i want to increase the the microsd to 512mb. Garmin says the microsd that came with the unit are tied together with the unit and the card would not work in another unit. This includes copying the maps onto another microsd and using it on my unit.

Is it true what garmin are saying that i am stuck with the 256mb microsd?

My main concern is what happens if the microsd failed/corrupted which would make my sat nav useless.

Many info would be much appreciated.

back up the software onto your pc..and if the worst happens ,load it back onto the original card...

aye, the 's' in 'sd' (as in micro sd) stands for secure. i.e. not user-accessible. the map is tied to that particular card as opposed to the i3 so if you back up the files from the card just in case then if you ever have to load them back then all is well as you can put them on the original card Smile

One assumes if the unit was ever stolen it would be useless without the microsd?

Also, can garmin put a block on all future updates on that unit if i report it stolen?

Excuse my ignorance but could you tell me if the following is correct or not.
The garmin i3 is supplied with the uk map on the SD card, the entire data on this card should be copied and backed up onto my PC in case I have to reload the card at a later date ?
If I want to purchase maps for say Germany then I buy a new SD card with the Germany maps preloaded ? - Do I simply remove the original SD card and replace it with the new card ?
There appear to be free maps available online, Can I purchase say a 512 mb SD card and load maps onto this ? would it work ?

I have been looking through some of the forums but I am not too sure on these points
appreciate any advice given.
