Charging TomTom Rider headset

Hi folks,

I have recently bought a TomTom Rider for a month-long tour of Germany I'll be making next month. The device itself conveniently charges from the bike cradle, but it seems I will still need to pack the charger to be able to charge the Bleutooth headset.

I'd rather be able to leave the charger at home (luggage space is an issue). Has anyone got a clever way of charging this without the mains charger?

The main problem appears to be that the headset cant be used while its being charged so your better to take the charger and do it overnight so that the headset can be used while riding

:o Well the main problem here is that I need to take the charger at all... which is kinda what I was getting at... whether there's a clever solution to being able to charge it without taking the mains charger... rather than any other random issues there might happen to be with the unit :-)

It would be possible to rig a charger that charges from the bike but then you have to be safe that whoever rigs it up does it right so that in the morning you dont have a flat battery on the bike . That to my mind would be worse than having to carry a charger and use a hotels electricity to charge the headset

I was wondering whether I could charge it from the Tomtom itself. That'll always be charged, so I was thinking along the lines of making short lead with a DC jack at either end. If the charging jack on the Tomtom happens to be live when the unit's switched off - but sure it will be as it's a LiIon battery so I guess not charged directly like a straightforward lead-acid or NiCd would be...

One charger may not seem a lot, but I need to take a phone charger, iPod charger, Tomtom charger, camcorder charger... and the chargers in most of these cases are larger than the devices themselves.

hi lump76 new to all this myself Confused

just got a car kit for my ttrider & it comes with a cig lighter power cable , now, as the ttrider is charged with the same charger as the bluetooth headset it seems the cig lighter cable should also be able charge the headset , now i know this will not allow you to charge your head set off your bike Sad

it does give the option of a more compact & easyier to stow charger HTH

That's a good idea - thanks. Some bikes have cigarette lighter type power connectors. Mine doesn't, but £2 at Maplins will sort that out. The car charger will only be a bit smaller than the mains charger, I'd have thought, but probably enough to make it worthwhile.

I've mounted a cig lighter socket, wired so that it is permanetly live. That way I can charge my bluetooth receiver on the bike overnight.

As a bonus, you can do the same with your phone and leave the mains charger for that at home as well.

Never had a problem with the bike not staring in the morning, and given the relative size of the batteries, I can't see it happening. If charging your bluetooth overnight flattens you bike battery then either your alternator or battery is in trouble and needs sorting before you go on tour.
