Could be awkward for people who shorten their name to Bas :D |

Bas is fine, but I really don't think we need a thread that is centered around fooling the TomTom unit in to swearing - Mike |

I actually find the TTS quite annoying--one of the things I hate most is when travelling along a motorway, rather than saying take next exit 25 etc it says take m3 j25---pronounced *jay* 25 etc--why can't it say take junction 25 and then the road number for that junction..!!!!definitely not so good and also when it comes to multiple rd numbers..the other day I had 3 Rd numbers read out and the street name--it just went on and on. |

Very interesting!!
Some Scottish place/street names :D Try cutting & pasting the following:
Code: | Milngavie - pronounced Millguy - pretty good,,
Strathaven - pronounced Straven - pretty good,,
Kirkcudbright - pronounced Kirkcoobry - pretty good,,
Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow - pronounced Sucky, hall Street - not so good,,
Buccleuch Street in Glasgow - pronounced Buckloo Street - not so good,, |
So I'm guessing it must use a table of pronounciations for place names, but not street names!
and for a real laugh, try
Code: | llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch |
seems to get a bit tongue tied! I don't speak Welsh, but I'm sure that's not right!
Can anyone try these on their GO? _________________ Jock

Tried out the link to the text-to-speech demo and it can say things my 910 can not. The 910 has real problems with any place with "hurst" in the title. Is this the same speech engine? |

Yes, I agree, the link sounds fine. Done some testing with routes with other "hurst"'s along them. Lamberhurst, Sissinghurst etc and they sound OK. When I type our road name (which ends in "hurst") into the POI warning, it sounds OK. But on a route home, the "hurst" is shortened to "huh". Never mind. It can't say Stratford Upon Avon, by the way. It says Straightford Upon Avon. And Maidstone is pronouced Maidenhead! |

Yes I noticed Maidstone being pronounced Maindenhead. Others I have seen are:
Coxes Farm Road is pronounced "Coxes fm road"
Ingatestone is pronounced "ingotstone"
Perry St is pronounced "Perru street"
A1023 is pronounced "A one thousand twenty three"... but
A1111 (or similar) is pronounced "A one thousand and one hundred and eleven"
and "Avenue" is pronounced in a very peculiar way, almost like it starts saying "venue" while still saying "Av".
It's almost like there is a separate set of text used for the TTS, as it doesn't always match what is written on the screen - for example Maidenhead and Maidstone.
And it's even weirder if you set the voice to american. It can't pronounce "Road" - it quite clearly says "Rod" |

I live 3 miles from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch and took my tomtom 910 through there but she was quite clever and just said Holyhead Road!
I love the way she tries to pronounce all the welsh names though.
Keeps the journey interesting. |
