Here is what the Navman Store (Europe) has to say about the 'imporved' 2005 software. If you are not in Europe, then go to your home area to see the write-up.
"Description:
The very latest Navman SmartST™ 2005 navigation software will allow current iCN 510 owners to upgrade to the latest 2005 features (as seen on the NEW iCN 520). These features include:
New Advanced address entry wizard and address search engine
New Optimised routing and guidance
New Navigate to 'Home' Option
New Improve Map imagery including:
- London Congestion Zone
- Improved road icons and road signage
- Displayed Railway Lines
SmartST 2005 also includes:
3D map view
Postcode search
Turn-by-turn voice guidance
Back-on-track automatic re-routing
Points-of-interest import function (i.e safety cameras, petrol stations, etc.)
Multi-stop trip planning (i.e A to B to C....)
Avoid Area to route around traffic black spots
Compatibility:
This SmartST 2005 software is compatible with iCN 510 and iCN 520 only."
Only you can decide if this is enough to pay £29 to update from V3! _________________ Gee-Pee

If you order SmartST v2005 you get a V3 disc plus a SmartST2005 disc (and maps discs). Load V3 first and then install 2005. After you do that you've got version 3.5x (help, about) |

They are not free - the last lot came with an update from V3 Smart ST and cost a total of £99. (Plus postage)
When I bought my iCN510 in November 2004, I updated the device with the European maps and they cost ca £145. There has been one map update in the last year to my knowledge, as mentioned in the first sentence. You cannot anticipate regular map updates but look out for them ' as and when ' _________________ Gee-Pee

No, you have already paid for the maps that you already own. You would have to pay for map updates, which you don't yet own, just as you'd have to pay for an AA 2006 Road Atlas if you wanted to update from your 2005 edition. _________________ Tim |

I would presume that the updated maps are required in order to get railway lines displayed on the maps?
Can anyone confirm this?
What about road exit numbers? Is that information supplied with the new maps as well?

I have SmartSTV3 and the screen refreshes every second giving a jerky effect on the screen when moving unlike TT5 which appears smooth. Is SmartST 2005 the same as V3, or smooth like TT5. |

SmartST 2005 is, except for a couple of small changes (for instance that Outlook integration has stopped working), identical to V3. I wouldn't recommend you to upgrade unless you need the newer maps.
