For those that have experience of both V7 and V8 maps, what are the major differences and is it worth upgrading?

On the whole I belong to the '... if it ain't broke don't fix it ...' brigade and I'm just a bit concerned that some thieving postie might try and use the transflash I've sent back to Garmin as a supplement to his income.

However, as the upgrade is free and, so far, anyway, Garmin have replaced stolen cards, maybe I'm worrying needlessly.

Any views, anyone?

There is more functionalty to V8 from V7. there are more built in POIs for a start. So yes it is worth the upgrade.

Funny story comming....... The road to Inverness Airport was shut so It could be upgraded.. V7 wanted to put me down the closed road. I did not report to Navteq as I knew it was to reopen after about six months. V8 now directs you down the senic route and not the lovely new road. Ho Hum Rolling Eyes

v8 is newer. 'nuff said!

also gives you better built in poi's etc (all updated) and with new categories.

If it is free then it is a must!
Basically, the main differences are in Northen Ireland and Channel Islands, and increased POI and navigational instructions.
It cost me £56 to update V7 to V8

The free upgrade v7 to v8 for the i3 is dependant on the date you bought your unit. After, 1st January 2006, I think, is the date that entitles you to a 'free' update!

I was indeed talking about the update CitySelect v7 to CityNavigator v8.
Again, the cut off date was 1st January 2006. I had to pay £56 because I had the v7 over one year.

The detail in CityNavigator v8 on my iQue 3600 and my GPSMap 60CS and on my friends i3 is identical.
However, I have the entire CityNavigator Europe v8 DVD to load onto my two units whereas the i3 microcards are an expensive option, and are not really worth buying if you intend travelling in different parts of Europe!

You might be better off buying an old CitySelect with 'unlock codes' and then updating for £56 to v8 with unlock codes for two units.

I spoke to Garmin last week on a different matter and the conversation got around to the gps with storage cards and they told me that if you have any i3 with version 7 they will replace it FOC with v8 if you send the card back .

Just spotted the post above saying about V8 maps have improved coverage of Channel Islands. I live in Guernsey and can say that v7 and v8 maps are identical for the Channel Islands. V6 maps had major roads, where as V7 had full detail. Previously had a cf que which came with v6 and upgrade to v7. Now have a nuvi with v8.
