I had always assumed (maybe incorrectly) that the EGNOS signal is a correction on the regular GPS signal and not an entirely separate system. It's absence just results in regular GPS accuracy.
I've never noticeably lost signal (other than tunnels etc.) and run EGNOS all the time.
Maybe I'm wrong though... _________________ Chas

Yes and it use up two of the available channels (assuming a 12 channel receiver) looking for the unpredictable/unreliable EGNOS sats that would be better employed looking for the more readily found normal ones which given the fact that the correction is so small could mean that having it enabled may lead to not being as usefull as some would hope. Thats my theory/observations anyway

I've never tried this but wouldn't the 'Satellite View' got at via the 'Diagnostics' menu show when WAAS/EGNOS is in play. With the eTrex a 'D' shows for the particular satellites? |

How do you get to diagnostics view, please? _________________ Anita

Turn the i3 on by holding down both left and right buttons. This loads a screen which includes tests for ROM, RAM and ASIC. When these tests are 'passed', press the left button to load a second screen which, amongst others, includes the heading 'Vbattery'. Now press the left button then the right button then rotate the wheel button both up and down and finally press it. This results in a 'Press OK for diagnostics menu' message. Press the wheel button to display the diagnostics menu then scroll to highlight 'Satellite View' and press the wheel button. Voila! |

Thanks for your help, mhb.
Thought I hadn't RTFM properly, but can still find no reference to diagnostic mode.
What a lot of information's hiding in there! Pity I can't understand most of it 8O _________________ Anita

Thanks for the trick but I am stuck in the satellite view as the display seems frozen with no satellite shown. Is there another trick to make this display alive ?

Ah - the old addage - never assume, check For those of you wondering how EGNOS works, then I suggest clicking on the link in one of my previous posts in this thread, which will take you to the EGNOS website where they give a description of what the system is and how it works. To summarise - the correction data is transmitted by 3 EGNOS satellites (only one of which is over Europe), with EGNOS enabled receivers being able to receive these signals and use them appropriately. The data includes current positions of GPS and GLOSNAS satellites as well as the accuracy of their atomic clocks and how accurate the data coming from those individual satellites is.
If anyone has changed from NORMAL to WAAS/EGNOS you will notice that the unit reverts to looking for satellites again - this was my question about what happens if it loses the EGNOS signal.
I am still waiting for an answer from Garmin, but if they do manage to reply then I will post the answer under this thread. |

If you lose your view of the EGNOS satellite then the GPS will keep using the last known correction data for a few minutes and eventually switch back to non-EGNOS mode if it can't reaquire the EGNOS satellite fix. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Thanks for the reply Skippy. Not wishing to sound rude , but is that statement made from an educated guess or from known information? It will save me having to wait for Garmin to email an answer (if they ever do!!). |
