Have spent all afternoon with this 100 quids worth of upgrade. First it lost all my favouites despite having gone through the Back-up routine, they just don't show up in the Restore dialog. Then when I try to load the new maps it says there is only 4mb of 122 available and I cannot even load southern England yet the old maps were deleted and do not show up as loaded anymore. Any ideas, please? Do I need to wipe the card to start again? If so, how? I do not have an separate SD card reader.
regards, Icarus

I have no experience of having performed the 510-520 upgrade, but the first rule for anything like this is BACKUP !!!

I would copy the entire contents of the SD card to a folder on your PC via ActiveSync and then you don't need to worry about anything that happens to the card.

A card reader is a good idea, but not essential. The one benefit is that data transfer is faster via a USB2 card reader than via ActiveSync on the 510, as I suspect it is only a USB1.1 device.

If you plug the 510 into the USB cable, you can then "explore" the device. If you want to wipe the card clean just delete the contents of the "storage card" folder.

As I said first off, I've not done the SmartST 2005 upgrade - perhaps anyone who has could shed some light on your problems??

Well, thank you Geoff, that was most helpful. I had not realised one could access the files on the 510 or the card by bypassing the usual Smart St desktop. The delete of the card was successful and so, partially, was the upgrade. They don't tell you that the new files are bigger and you can no longer get the UK on the standard card, that you will need to buy a new card and a reader. Having done so and spent hours putting UK and parts of France on the 510 I have taken your advice and backed up to the hard drive in a fraction of the time. Now I only have the tedium of rebuilding my POIs again...
Thanks again

Hi
Your V3.5 maps are very different from your V3. Your old software will not recognize V3.5 maps, but your new 2005 desktop software will recognize your old maps. I backed up my unit via active synk and saved it to a folder created on the desktop.
I uninstalled my old software from my desktop using windows.
Then installed the new desktop software.
I then followed the 2005 manual and uninstalled my iCN.
Then installed the new 2005 software onto my iCN.
Reformatted my SD card, followed the instructions on how to rebuild an SD card on the Navman website.
I have never had any major problems, except for a few minor ones, which was down to lack of experience.
When all installed (software), you will have to register your new maps, then go and get your registered info so that you can use your old maps as well as your new ones. (NOT ON THE SAME SD CARD)
My way of thinking is to make a fresh start, and not make the hole any bigger than you have all ready dug.
I have a card reader, which makes life a lot faster.
If you look back at my previous posts you will find that I have covered this topic on many occasions.
Regards.
