|
|
Looking through the Maplin site it would seem there is a versionof the I3 without a transflash slot (map data is held in onboard memory)Is this an economy step to far?. Can anybody confirm this as being on latest models from Garmin.
From Maplin I3 q & a
) Can you tell me why the i3 I received 3 days ago did not include a transflash card ? - Roy
A) The latest models do not have a transflash card as the mapping is in built. |

I wonder what happens when new map versions are released. Are they not updatable, or would the whole unit have to be sent to Garmin? |

The Maplin FAQ that you quoted, doesn't say slot - merely card.
I'm suggesting that, because surely Garmin haven't actually changed the physical unit design.
i5s have maps on memory, but as far as I know are still the same physical unit to look at.
I'd suggest that if there are any changes, that merely the maps are held internally, and there's no card in the transflash slot.
I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem to make much sense that they'd actually change the i3 physically - at least from the case perspective. |

Hi i have just got my i3 in last week from halfords and I can confirm that the unit does not have a transflash card installed but it does still have the slot for the transflash card so would like to think that the slot is still working if needed. Would think garmin have used internal memory to save a few pounds which you cant argue with at less than 130 pounds :D
I am very pleased with the performance of the i3 and have just updated to the new firmware 2.90 with no problems. |

seems like garmin are going down the american 'i5' route with the mapping on the unit with a card slot for expansion....bet you there will be other garmin gps models coming out soon with card slots and no card supplied so you have to pay extra to buy mapping cards...so keep your cards safe cos you will probaly be able to use them on future garmin gps's.... _________________ *************************** |

You still need the slot to put in maps of France etc. |

Ok now that we know the card slot IS available to use on later I3,s What size is the ON board memory? How much is free for poi,s?There must be a physical limit. I assume when a compatible transflash card is inserted it overides the internal one.
Lots of questions I know but I don,t have one to play with |

Well the spare memory is not very much, I can tell you the most I can get on is about 0.75meg.
Judging from someone elses attempt on this forum they have not managed to store any further POI's using the transflash slot on the new i3 models...... this has held me back from buying a transflash card for mine . |
