All,
I have received some intelligence from a reasonably dependable source that the new digital automated tracking system between Junctions 3 and 7b on the M42 are scheduled to go live on 1 April (not an early April fool!)
There are 276 digital cameras set to a 2mph tolerance. You will see no flash - the first you will know will be when the £60 fine and 3 points land on your doormat. 8O |

That's different to our information, the tolerance so I'm told is set to 10mph over the posted speed limit in the variable speed sections. I'll check. _________________ Darren Griffin |

This site (Highways Agency) states that there are 268 signs and this may be where the confusion in your information comes from.
http://www.highways.gov.uk/knowledge/1340.aspx
It states elsewhere on the site that the enforcement cameras would go on line when the variable speed limit's came into force, this was some time ago.
I certainly stick to the posted speed limit when I drive on that section.
If I remember correctly though the database was updated by a contractor who was involved in the installation of the cameras so is probably pretty reliable.
Nick. |

I've just driven this way and can confirm that the cameras in the latest database are correct. There are nowhere near 276, but there are a lot of gantrys, all with warning signs. Most don't have cameras, but the ones that do, have 8 each.
I wouldn't worry about them too much as I don't think I got into 2nd gear more than a couple of times during the whole route. It moved a lot more smoothly before in my opinion when everyone was looking at the road, not up into the gantrys like I was! |

oddsock is dead right - I tried it out here and it works like a dream. Thanks both. Don't get stuck in a loop, though.

Delighted to hear that someone's maintaining the ancient tradition of THREE pedals and a wobbly stick. Can't be many of you left . _________________ Garmin 2360LT

I'm tempted by an automatic and if the Audi CV auto was available on the Audi A4 I got I might have gone for it. Many (most?) auto's still give worse performance and less economy than the manual.
Kind regards,

A 3 series with an auto box is something that shouldn't exist, and certainly never will on my driveway!
I have driven this way again tonight and the traffic was light & flowing nicely until I got to the variable limits, which went 60,50,40,40,50,60 for no reason other than to generate revenue as far as I could see. |

I received the same intelligence, and I suspect from the same source. The source is a company that sells speed camera detectors. I would therefore take the 2mph with the proverbial salt. The police and politicians would not dare to antagonise many many motorists with a 2mph margin. They have to maintain some credibility. _________________ Too many people "search for the zero inside themselves". Sadly, many fail to find even that.

Well, with the state of the M42 as it is at the moment, they will probably just lower the variable speed limit to 20mph, thus making the 2mph into 10% and nail you that way instead. |
