I'm just about to carry out this mod of fitting a mono jackplug socket. Does it make any difference how you connect the wires to the speaker?
i.e. which wire goes to which terminal on the speaker? |

Yes, if you get them the wrong way round the unit will give you instructions in reverse - the best way to cure this is to drive backwards in the car, this normally counteracts the problem
just kidding! - no difference at all!
If you are concerned though normally a red, or a white, or a cable with a line (trace) on it is classed as 'live' - but this really bears no relevance to what you are doing, anyway will do! (said the actress to the bishop )

|

I've been using my Streetpilot i3 on my bike connected to an Autocom unit from an audio jack socket wired to the i3's speaker terminals. One thing that I've noticed is a rattling noise (low level) coming through the earphones, especially on rough road surfaces. This disappears momentarily, as soon as a voice command is heard from the Garmin. I've come to the conclusion that this is a result of the speaker cone vibrating due to front suspension movement, which in turn generates the noise as an electrical signal. The Garmin is rigidly mounted on the front yoke so is subject to quite a lot of vibration.
Has anyone else noticed this on the Streetpilot i3? I have wondered whether it would be possible to surpress this low level signal by adding an electronic component across the speaker terminals. Any suggestions? My electronics knowledge is very basic. _________________ Cheers,

I'm guessing that you've wired your headphone jack in parallel with the speaker, so that the speaker still works when headphones are connected.
Most headphone jack sockets have at least one changeover contact - the simplest solution is to rewire the socket such that the speaker is electrically disconnected when headphones are connected. |

Thanks for the reply Ash. Yes you're right - I did just wire a mono jack socket in parallel with the speaker. How do I wire it up to isolate the speaker when the plug is used? Incidentally, the jack socket had 3 contacts on it - 2 of them isloated and one off the ground. I've only wired up to 2 of them. _________________ Cheers,
