Hi All
I want to buy a big SD card for my Dell X50v to install TOMTOM.
The card is only used in PDA.
In ebay you have the flowing choices.
Sandisk 2G SD card (OEM) ---£45
Sandisk 2GB Ultra® II Secure Digital SD™ Card (OEM)---£65
Sandisk 2GB Ultra® II Secure Digital SD™ Card ---£80
Is it really worth to buy the expensive one to get tomtom run faster??
thanks |

Check the fastest speed your unit will operate and choose the card which matches.
In my case Mio stated 133x so I went for the Kingston Ultimate. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Tom Tom should be running OK on a normal card as mine does so just use a normal 256mb's card just for TT5.
I only ever use a 1gb fast card for photos mp3's etc on my PDA. |

Erm, reluctant to disagree with maca2 on this as he's given some really good advice loads of times. But here goes.
From my own experience, since using the 512MB High Speed card, the blue arrow on screen shows me actually passing a turning when I'm doing so, with my previous card, Kingston 1 Gig Standard, it always showed slightly behind where I was. Also the voice indication, turn right or left, at a T junction, now comes several yards ahead of the junction instead of at it. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

thanks for the help from Lost_Property,maca2 and mburton2.
It looks that the card's read speed is more important to tomtom.
Found some test result in aximsite.

I think I will go for a Kingston 2GB card instead of Sandisk. |

Just because the Kingston 256MB card was fast, it doesn't follow that the 2GB one will be!!
I prefer to ensure that TomTom is tracking my position as closely as possible. I therefore confine myself to 512MB cards, and have several for covering diferent countries. They are pretty cheap and it's very little trouble to change cards occasionally. I work on the assumption that as TomTom would have to read through so much more data on a 2GB card, it must be slower

If it has the same speed rating of 133x then it must be.

If you have the GB or GB+ map chosen, wont the other maps in effect be invisble and ignored.
Personally I only need GB and France+ maps and they fit OK on a 512MB card. Should I need another country or two then I'll buy another Kingston Ultimate 133x and swap when necessary.
However, if someone wants to have a number of pictures, or music, to carry around, then obviously a bigger card would be better for then needs.
I had considered a 166x until I found the fastest my Mio168 would work at is 133x. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

a very good post was found about the sd/cf card used in PDA
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=99097
The result is surprise!!!!
A-Data 50x 2G SD card is the fastest card at the moment.
If it is the case, this is the card for tomtom.
Am I right??? |

Don't know if this is relevant for a DellX50V but I was running TT navigator 5.21 on my O2 XDAIIi (running WM 2003) with a SANDISK UltraII 1GB (66X) SD card and it ran fine except for using the traffic updates via the GPRS connection when it constantly froze during downloading the data, probably 4 times out of 5. It was very frustrating.
Tomtom suggested using a minimum 80X card so bought a Kingmax 2GB (122X). I can't say I noticed Tomtom running any faster or better with the faster, higher capacity card, but it certainly improved the traffic downloading. Now only freezes 1 time out of 5, so still not perfect. Windows media also freezes less when playing MP3s.
I subsequently found that by disconnecting and reconnecting the card after tomtom traffic had frozen, it continued to download the data and then carried on without having to carry out a soft reset.
So I don't think a faster or bigger card made tomtom run better but it certainly improved the traffic downloading.
Hope this is useful. |
