|
|
Hi all
bought my Garmin i3 v8 from maplin and am very happy with it , ive loaded the maplin speed camera disk to my i3 and iam very impressed, i live in N.Ireland and do approx 35k miles per year.
In N.Ireland we only have a few fixed speed and only 1 red light cam but iam impressed with the mobile cams allerts ,iam thinking about upgrading to the £19 per/year updates.
But my main question is ,,, i havent been stopped for speeding in over 6 years so ie no points , even tho i do 35k per year.
I would like to know how many out there have been stoped for speeding WHILE using gps?
many thanks

Hiya mate,
when you say stopped do you mean stopped (physically by a cop) or do you mean caught on camera and had the ticket through the door? - I ask as a mate has been using GPS systems for a few years now and never had a ticket whilst using, he drives daily up and down the country - BUT he has had 6 points on rare occassions he has been without his GPS.
Lesson learned there then! _________________ **********************************

The camera database can help you check your speed when you approach cameras but nothing is 100% reliable.
If you speed (accidentally of course) then you are probably going to get caught eventually. _________________ Gone fishing! |

If you get cought and stopped for speeding by the police you almost certainly deserve it.
If you get cought on camera and recieve a letter in the post this is not necessarily the case.
Its only a matter of a short time before speed cameras goes the same way as parking wardens and become a money making exercise for councils strapped for cash - probably because they overspent on some stupid public transport scheme.
The emphosis is becoming more and more to book as many people for small offences as possible. Really serious offences like 100mph in a 30mph zone are chased up with less vigour than 35mph in a 30mph zone.
The business of a court case and all that , they just cant be bothered with the hassle what they want is people with clean licenses getting booked for trivial offences. People who will put the £60 cheque straight in the post.
People who are prepeared to invest the time in arguing thier case seem to almost always get off no matter how bad the offense. How many people seem to get off because the equiptment wasn't calibrated properly. I think they just say, oh we got an arguer here thats going to take time and interfere with the money collection, just let him off. |

Do you not think that this is the case already?
The government has already admitted that there are fewer traffic police on the roads because most of the enforcement is done by camera now.
A police patrol costs an awful lot more money to operate than a speed camera and doesn't bring in enough revenue to cover the costs, whereas a camera makes a healthy profit. _________________ Gone fishing! |

"A police patrol costs an awful lot more money to operate" If it's cheaper to operate a GATSO than a Police Ptrol can i have some of my taxes back please?
If the cameras make so much cash why not use it fund more patrols to catch people
1) drive badly
2) use mobile phones whilst driving
3) have no tax
4) have no insurance
5) have no MOT
6) have no license
7) speed outside the 10 meter "capture zones" of GATSOs.
It's like "We can either have expensive patrols that catch a wide variety of offenses but makes no money or catch people speeding through a 10 meter section of road and virtually ignore all other road offenses & make a huge profit" |

Plus a police officer will normally take into account how you are driving. So that, even if you are over the limit out on the open road, if you are driving sensibly then you might just get a warning, if you're lucky.
On the other hand, a camera is indescriminate. I recently got a fixed penalty and 3 points for doing 81 Mph on the M6 motorway near Penrith in light traffic and perfectly clear conditions. It was a camera van parked on a flyover above the carraigeway. I couldn't believe it when the NIP came in the post.
I found out later from a document published by the same safety camera partnership that the 85 percentile speed figure for that location is in fact 83 Mph. Which means that they are issuing speeding tickets to almost every driver on the motorway. If that isn't revenue collecting, then I don't know what is. |

Here's a reply from the government's point of view.
Ha ha ha ha. No you can't!!
That's the beauty of the system. The net income (from fines) increases and the net cost (of policing the roads) decreases. Overall we (the government) makes more money. Are we going to give that surplus tax money back to you? NO! Of course we aren't. This is what we call a "Stealth Tax".

Like we said, the aim is to cut down on patrols not introduce more of them. Most of the offenses you describe are labour intensive to detect, there's no money in detecting them. What we are looking for is offenses which are easy to detect using a robotised system, using cameras or a database. These include only three of the items from your list, we won't bother with the rest.
3) have no tax
4) have no insurance
5) have no MOT
You can already be fined for not having a tax disc on your car (even though it is not used on the road) unless you fill in a SORN declaration. Kerching, automatic fine if your tax expires while you are on holiday. Nice little earner, all we need is a database of who owns the car and if they have a tax disc or SORN. Hey we have got that, let's print some tickets. Easy money.
There is now a bill before parliment to make it an offense to be the registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle. Kerching. Run another database query and more money rolls in. Another nice little earner. Loverly.

Yep. There is one more ingredient required. We need a load of spin to make people think that speed alone is the cause of most accidents. We've put up thousands of cameras, issued millions of tickets and gotten our spin doctors to tell everyone how the number of deaths at camera sites is dropping dramatically. The only problem is that we have to gloss over the fact that the overall number of people killed on the roads is RISING. . Where's Alistair Campbell, he'll know what to do.
(Devil's hat off now. Normal service will be resumed shortly) :o _________________ Gone fishing! |

Well if I may make a slight suggestion, if people didn't break the speed limit in the first place there would be no need to complain about how much "stealth tax" is being collected, as you wouldn't have to pay it anyway.....
Back to the original topic, the same applies - why on earth do you need a Satnav to tell you where the speed cameras are? You shouldn't need to know if you're sticking within the law. |

And how would you know if you are sticking within the law? Do you drive around watching your speedo obsessively? Do you never exceed the speed limit even accidentally? Have you ever noticed that many speed cameras are located at places where it's easy to inadvertently exceed the speed limit?
Do you even drive a car? (BTW, a Nissan Micra doesn't count as a car). _________________ Gone fishing! |

Watch out for the camera vans in Cumbria they are everywhere. Especially on the A66 from the M6 towards Workington. There might not be many fixed cameras in Cumbria but the mobile ones more than make up for it.
Also there are a raft of cameras just north of J41 northbound on a green bridge, not sure what they are about but I'm sure they will give you a ticket if you are doing anything naughty. |

If they are blue then most likely Traffic Master cameras. They don't / can't give you tickets. They just monitor the speed and general flow of traffic.
Are there any road markings? |
