you could be right lester, and this may account for MaFt and others getting a card back that doesnt work due to the fact that it might have not been ''v8'td'' properly...

so it's probably more cost effective to simply have them prepared, and simply send a "new" one out.

Surely that would be more costly? I would have though a team of folks sat at respective PCs and inserrting the old card in then updating would be a more cost effective approach?

I'm just thinking that with my suggestion - and this is assuming that they even bother checking the original transflash card sent in, depending on the scale of this, they may not even bother - all they have to do is inspect the card (if they bother) and bung the v8 card (that was handily prepared earlier - Blue Peter style) packaged, into the return envelope.

If they actually processed the individual cards, they'd have to spend time writing however many hundred(s) of MB to the transflash card.

Whereas, if they've got plenty of V8 cards prepared, all they have to do is check the original - if they even bother - then package up the new one, no messing around, waiting for the V8 maps to be written to the original card, then (maybe!) checked.

could maybe ask aomeone who will be sending their's in from the forum to either log the serial number or mark it somehow... we could even phone garmin up - or we could do nothing and just accept that they are being honourable in their word- and be happy with that!

I think it may be worth an email to garmin though, just incase it does interfere with any warranties

I rather assumed that's what somebody had done, who knew they hadn't got the same card back.

Do you expect the people you'll get on the end of the phone will know? Would you expect that Garmin would necessarily disclose how they go about this?

Well they are being honourable - they are upgrading people with V7 maps to V8, for no charge - that's pretty honourable in my book. They are even providing a freepost address, and sending them back by courier, I believe. The only cost to the customer, being packaging, and the downtime without the card.

In what way would not necessarily returning the exact same transflash card NOT be honourable - given that it's completely overwritten. Which is why I suspect they just have loads ready prepared, and are POSSIBLY verifying the original card, and just sending out a new one.

Why should it, though - THEY'VE supplied the new card.

And were there a warranty claim, how would they ever know that the card used, was anything but what it should be (especially given that they - or their agents - are actually supplying the replacement).

I'd have to say, though, so long as you got WORKING v8 maps back, what difference does it make?

Blimey that is a quick turn around, would you know if it was your own card you got back?

I really have no idea. I would doubt it - does it matter?

oton little bit to me, - was just curious my friend, it appears someone earlier in the thread had not had his returned to him, he did get a card back, but not his. - I was curious as to whether it may affect future warranty if the cards are registered to the unit?

I knew its wasn't my original card because it was made in Taiwan, the new one is made in China. I did also make a note of the serial number.

On another point a friend bought an i3 from Halfords a few days ago with Version 2.70 software installed and the sd card was a Kingmax, not the usual Sandisk.

I'm sorry about my "boring" post, but the main point i was trying to make was that my card was returned by Royal Mail (normal 1st class). I don't have a lot of faith in good old Postie, so i was pleased at the speed of the card returning. More to the point, if Garmin are now sending the cards back in this way, if yours gets "lost", you are kyboshed! It would be worth thinking about this before sending your expensive to replace cards. Good luck all! Smile
