Hello folks,
This is my first post and I'm glad I found this board!
I am looking into buying a Pocket PC, both for regular use and for GPS.
The GPS is only for fun on vacation, nothing serious. Whatever PPC I
buy, it will need to have a CF port because I have a 1gig microdrive as
well as a 256meg CF for my camera.
After reviewing the different models, I am leaning towards the Dell Axim 5
because it has everything I want and is quite a bit cheaper than the Ipaq
or Toshiba's. I am thinking of adding a CF GPS unit for handheld and car
use.
My question is, is the Axim 5 a good PPC for this purpose? I am concerned
that there is only one CF slot so I can't use the GPS and my memory
cards at the same time. If I need to buy a SD card, what is the minimum
memory I need? Is 64megs enough for say most cities?
Thanks in advance for any help! |

I use an X5 in conjunction with a Pretec CF GPS (not the Low Power version) - which also has an external aerial option. However there are also a number of good CF devices in Dave's reviews.
I use TomTom and also Fugawi - both work well
A minimum SD size is really 128M (a full TomTom UK map is 90M - unless you're using regions or the other TomTom software 'City Maps') - I haven't moved up to 256M yet due to some of the reported problems, but probably will Xmas time _________________ Nick |

Nick,
Thanks for your help. I have decided to go with a Garmin Geko 201
handheld, which will be used in mouse mode when attached to the Axim's
serial port. This gives me the option of using it separately as a handheld,
but of course it is more bulky than the CF slot solution. |
