Hello everyone...it's my first post and I need some help from you all

Here's the deal...up until yesterday I was going to get a TOM TOM ONE but after a littlr bit of digging on the net there seems to be quite a few disgruntled people wityh it's mapping capabilities.

SO Here's my situation.
1. I won't be using the SATNAV an awful lot (so a cheap unit is all I can justify buying)
2. I really only want it for UK & Northern Ireland (ROI would also be nice)
3. The size is also quite inportant (I have a small car and don't want a huge unit blobking my side of the windscreen, trust me it wouldn't take much!).

I've since whittled it down to three units...

TOMTOM ONE
GARMIN STREETPILOT i3
MIO 268

Which one do I go for...YOU DECIDE! 8O

oh..here's what I see as + & - of the units for me.

TOM = touch screen, nice compact case, plug charger, only GB coverage would have to buy GB+ to get only approx 30% coverage of N.I.

GARMIN=Much cheaper, has GB & NI. & ROI shipped with unit, free POI, no plug charger, no touch screen, no nice fitting case, no amusing voices!

MIO=Don't know much about but is in price bracket!

If you know of any other serious runners then please shout 'em at me!!!

Given your stated usage I'd reccomend the Garmin i3.

I was in your position a few weeks ago and ended up with the Garmin. I am absolutely delighted with it. I don't know enough about the others to make a comparison, but I don't think you'll regret buying one.

As you won't be using the Sat Nav much, maybe a PDA would suit you better, as you can use it for names/addresses/telephone numbers, birthdays, appointments etc. You'd probably get more use out of it than a dedicated unit.

I have a Mio 168 with TTN5.21 software. You can get one with GB Maps plus Major Roads of Europe which give you reasonable coverage in Europe and Eire. Not door to door but close to where you want.

A friend has a Navman PiN570 and she's really happy with it. Not sure about NI and Eire coverage.

So far it seems like the Garmin's winning the public voootttte

Murrayhouse- whats the speaking voice like? I kinda heard my friends TOMTOM300 and thought that driving along to John Cleese would be very entertaining!

Lost_Property - I'm not really into PDA's an all that. I don't have much use for their features...besides I'm kinda a homegrown kinda person (who flirts with technology on the side) 8)

Keep them view points coming...(I've seem a lot of i3's on Ebay though :P )

2. Yes - the i3's screen is small - but large enough to see the next turn - again, you can't look at a screen (for long) whilst on the move...

3. The only real omission on the i3 is the ability to change voices, but the female UK one is bland but functional...and celebrity voices are hardly core functionality Laughing

my main device is an xda2i in a holux cradle i do have an I3 that i use now and again and it's a great little piece of kit for the money though it is very basic. The tt1 is the same software as on my pda. the one would think be over kill for you i think for the use you sate, yes you do get many more features in on the tt1 and the one is easier to use with the touch screen and has a browsealbe map ( you can move round the map by draging it) which the I3 doesnt have i have just lent my I3 out to a coluege at work for his girlfreind to try out

I have to say that given the choice, the Touch Screen UI wins hands down for many reasons.

But the ONE and i3 are not in the same league or price range and so cannot be fairly compared.

but I have to ask, where are the aerials and the TV display - I thought that was a standard fit on these type of cars,
Back on topic, Somerfield and Woolies have been selling them at £99 but I doubt you will find any in the North West that are left on the shelf - the e-bay units are probably people making a quick buck, buy for 99 sell for 130 or more - Mike
