|
|
This is amazing !
I mistakenly left my 1Gb SD Card (in its case) in my jeans pocket and then put it through cycle E on my Hotpoint washing machine. To make matters worse, it then went through a 60 minute tumble drying session (Hotpoint again).
When I realised (faaaaar too late!) I removed the case and saw that there was still still a small amount of water within it. The card was slightly, err moist, so I took it out, left it on the radiator for an hour, put it back into my Tomtom and guess what ??
IT ONLY BL**DY STILL WORKS !!
All my files are totally still intact |

This was covered on the Gadget show a while back, they did the washer/ drier, microwave, swiming pool etc. and a whole number of other destructive trials on storage media, Not that I would recomend anyone to try this - the SD is not far off indestructable, with the possible exception of static damage or lightning strike (but with the later the PDA wouldn't work and neither would the individual carrying it) - USB memory sticks are the same, my 1GB unit has endured 5 trips through the washer drier, and every time it still works - thats the problem with pockets that the wife seldom checks!! - Mike |

Its not surprising seeing SD cards have No Movable parts and very little to jam up or go wrong there essentially a small simple chipboard with conacts and a chip. Short of splitting the circuit board in two or delivery a nice static shock or other high current to it the most damge a washing machine will do it peel the label off and rust any rustable metals in them :P |

Whilst an SD without a write protect switch may not be secure, it is still an SD card. SD is a format and is not conditional on the presence of a write protect switch. |

From some of the posts we get on here, looks like some wives are going through the recent destinations lists too! 8O |

Be like me... don't wash your jeans.
I do smell like a tramp though :-) |

I've washed SD cards on more than one occasion, 50C wash too! They've all been fine.
In addition I've washed credit cards, bank notes and the smart card I use to get into work. All fine! None of them deliberately, you understand. |
