Posted: Mon Jan 16, 2006 1:52 am Post subject: European City Select V8 Maps (?) |
|
|
My apologies if I've missed a thread where this has already been discussed.
Bought my Quest1 (with European City Select V6) towards the end of last year. I registered it and requested the V7 map upgrade from Garmin. It never showed, but in the meantime I read some of the stuff here about not registering until V8 came along.
Then the first Quest went faulty and I got a replacement (which I haven't registered).
I was just wondering if anyone has heard when (if) there will be a V8 of European City Select?
Should I wait? Or should I just chase the V7 maps they promised from my first unit? (I presume that as Garmin never sent them way back, I just need to chase them for V7 again).
Currently I'm still using Europe City Select V6, but as the new year is here I could soon find myself taking a trip to France. If there's an imminent release of European City Select V8 I'll wait, but otherwise logic says I should get V7 and not worry about V8.
Anyone got info about a possible realease date of European City Select V8?
Thanks |

ST4S, I have recently registered my Quest to update to v.7.
Ollie Stone from garmin UK responded very quickly, considering it was christmas etc.
His response was that there are no v.7 left but I would be automatically given v.8! Bonus...
They should be arriving end of Jan (this one I hope), if not, then the E-mail will be warming up.... 8O
If you want his e-mail to confirm, send me a pm.
Regards
Enzo |

I rang Garmin UK last week for the update to V7, my Quest1 is only 2weeks old. the guy said V8 was due out soon but I could only have V7 for free which is a shame, however the V7 cd's came 2 days later so it would seem there is or was some stock left. I'll just have to see how much V8 is going to cost me when it eventually appears. |

Thanks for the posts guys..
Jives, was it that you can only get V7 because you already registered the unit?
There has been lots of talk in other threads about the 'qualifier' for what gets you an upgrade.
My understanding is that there is a free upgrade if there is a later version of the maps at the time you register, so if you don't register until new maps appear, you get the very latest ones.
Enzo, if they told you that you'll get V8, it could be promising.
Can you possibly let me know what actually turns up?
Haven't had much success with PM's here, but my e-mail is st4s@removethis.forza.demon.co.uk
remove the removethis. part of the addy if you do mail.
Thanks |

Hi ST4S I had registered my unit just before ringing Garmin about the upgrade, so it may be the case thats why I can't have V8 free, when V8 comes out go for it and we'll all find out the facts then. _________________ Garmin Quest1 Ram Mount Z750 XR400 |

Hi everyone, I have also requested my free upgrade. here's a copy of e-mail received today. hope this helps....
Dear Sir
Thankyou for your patience the past few months. Due to unexpected high demand Garmin no longer have any supply of the version 7 upgrades. Garmin will not be producing any more upgrades to version 7 due to the fact that version 8 will be available towards the end of January. Garmin will also be discontinuing the City select software as it has reached it limitations of what it can do. What Garmin have done is allow your current GPS to be upgraded to the City Navigator software. The City Navigator has a improved routing algorithm compared to the City Select. This will improve the routing on your GPS.
You will be contacted by Garmin via email when version 8 becomes available. This email will ask you to reply to upgradeoffer.europe@garmin.com, I would recommend that you reply to me instead, providing me with all the relavent information the email requires.
With Best Regards,
Ollie Stone

ST4S, I'll keep you infomed as soon as I hear anything.
Judging from the other posts, we'll all get the upgrade at the same time!!

Thanks Enzo.
I decided to hold off from registering my Quest until I see V8 mentioned on Garmin's site (or until someone who receives it confirms that they are sending out V8 for sure). |

I bought my Quest about 5 month ago, and it came with version 6.
I phoned up for the V7 upgrade before I registered and Garmin told me to wait as V8 was coming out shortly....
I'm still waiting ..... and I still haven't registered..... |

I was just wondering does this mean that your getting V8 of city select or city navigator.
Just asking because the version I got with my 2720 was V8 of city navigator and that was in December

My understanding is that they have now discontinuted City Select at v7 and they are replacing it with City Navigator v8 for all mapping GPS units. I presume that people who get an upgrade will get CNv8.
Do you have City Navigator v8 on CD/DVD or is it preloaded on your unit? _________________ Gone fishing! |

The 2720 comes preloaded with the maps of europe on it and I got a DVD with CNV8 with it as well so that I can plan on PC . I gather that when it was 1st released it didnt have the PC software but then they added it after a short time.
The amusing part of it is when you say navigate to address it asks which country 1st, I did select Belgium once just to see and it did the full route from Southampton
