True, there will be fewer posts, but having a question asked 20 times and answered in 20 different ways doesn't really add a lot of value to the forum.
FAQ's are as old as the 'net. I think that on the whole they make a forum/newsgroup/website a better place because people can find the information they want quickly and you don't get the continuous stream of new users asking the same old questions.
I like the way MaFt has done it with a locked thread giving a concise answer to the question and a link to a seperate thread where people can elaborate, debate the accuracy or discuss the finer points.
I'd like to see the FAQs given a trial period to see how they go, I think the forum is big enough and growing at such a rate that it would be impossible to answer all the questions that people pose here! 8O _________________ Gone fishing! |

I agree that FAQ's are a good idea and there are far too many posts asking the same questions .This situation is escallating as people get frustrated by searches for the information they require throwing up far too many posts to read through then giving up and then posting for the answer.

One big combined FAQ in a single post, or wiki so that half the forum isn't faqs ? |

the idea of the faq's was indeed to reduce the number of seemingly pointless posts... new users tend not to search for answers before posting but an faq usually gets read.
the idea was not to kill off the forum, merely to add to it so the majority of posts become discussions rather than 25 questions per month asking why they can't get a satellite lock then 10 minutes later posting another reply saying it works now and they should have left it a bit longer...

The one thing that is guaranteed to kill *any* forum is people asking the same old questions over and over again, and not bothering to search for information themselves.
Quite a few people on here have in-depth knowledge of the various StreetPilots (remember, this isn't just for i3's) - but I for one have neither the time nor the inclination to wade though countless inane "how do I install the camera database" or "what's a v8 map" posts.
We'd like to help, we really would - but please, help us to help you... |

Just wanted to voice my support for the FAQ posts - when I joined, that would have been the first thing I would have gone to, rather than having to search, or ask questions I just know would have been asked / answered, easily before.
There's nothing worse than joining a new forum, finding the answers difficult to search for, and then having the regulars give you grief.
So all for the FAQ posts for me! |

FAQs Good :D I've directed some mates with new i3's to the FAQs (and the website of course) when they ask What, Where, How etc. |
