|
|
Hey guys I'm a newbie to the site and wondered if any of you could offer some advice? I've tried a search for my problem but couldn't find anything, so apologies if this has been asked before.
I bought my i3 from Argos today and when I first turned it on I got a warning screen:
"To use this unit, map data must be installed. Installation instructions are located in the enclosed setup guide.
Warning:
Do NOT connect this unit to your PC until instructed to do so as explained in the setup guide."
Pressing the buttons/scroll did not remove the screen, nor did reinstalling the batteries. I did a hard reset (pressed & held down the buttons whilst turning it on), where it went to the 'select language' page (which it didn't originally indicating the unit has been used before), but after doing that it went back to the 'Warning' page.
I tried upgrading the software to 2.7, which is did successfully but I still can't get away from that warning screen.
Anyone know what I can do? Is it faulty? Shall I take it back to Argos for another?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply
I took the card out and put it back in, and this came up:
"Please use the provided PC software to load maps containing turn-by-turn route information"
I thought the software came preinstalled already? It's like I can't access the software on the unit
*confused*

The i3 is designed to be a standalone system - you shouldn't need a PC in order to use it.
Stick some batteries in, take it back to Argos, demonstrate that it's faulty and demand a replacement.
And don't take any BS about how they'll have to send it back the manufacturer first - don't forget your statutory rights as a consumer ;) |

Hey there I think that might have sorted it
I pressed the wheel down and another screen came up with the 'Where to' question on it. I'll go and have a play to check, but I think it should be OK now
Thanks

Cr*p
Well that lasted long
I got as far as trying to input my home address and on the edit page the unit froze. The only way to turn it off was to take the batteries out....
Repeated that several times and it still freezes. That annoying warning page is always there at the start too......
Any ideas..... (apart from hurling it out of the window)?

I had exactly this problem but mine did work out of the box for a few hours first. I did take the card in and out but it was the full reset which improved matters, thanks to this forum (and no thanks to the garmin instruction manual !). Although it has been OK for the following 4 hours, I remain apprehensive that its going to fail again, so I emailed Garmin who replied as follows: ( I have sw version 2.5)
BEGINS
I would recommend updating the unit software version for the i3 to the
latest version. This can be downloaded from our website. You will need to
install the webupdater first of all. Once you have installed the webupdater
you double click on the webupdater file. It will ask you if it is a serial
or usb connection. You would select USB connection. The device should then list in the device box.
Select "next" and the updater will check the internet for the latesr
versions available for this unit.
If there is an update available the updater will then run the update.
http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?product=999-99999-27
If this fails to resolve the problem then a master reset would be required.
Warning all user data will be lost ie saved addresses.
Switch the unit off.
Press and Hold the Arrow button, Wheel button and the Power button all at
the same time until a message appears warning you user data will be lost.
You would select Yes to this and then follow the on screen instructions.
You will then need to leave the unit out in open space for appx 30 minutes
to acquire satelittes.
I hope this helps you.
If you have any further questions please let me know.
Regards, etc Garmin (Europe) Ltd
.
ENDS
You can see that this reply avoids a direct answer to the problem, but implies it is a bug which Garmin have not replicated yet. Please let us know how you get on. |

Hey thanks for your reply
I've got version 2.7 which is the latest software as far as I know. Also I've done several hard resets and the problem still remains. I'll try and get a replacement model tomorrow and I'll let you know how it goes
Thanks for your help
