What would happen if I walked up a mountain with my i3? Would the arrow be in the right place or would it get confused and place me on the nearest road? |

i think the arrow will show you in the correct position but wouldnt recomend using the i3 for hill walking as its designed for street navigation _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. Good bye IOS don't let the door hit you on the way out .

I don't want anything fancy. Or directions. For example I usually just mark the point where my car is, so I can find my way back! |

I can mark a position when on the road with the car. As long as the arrow shows my true position on the mountain (and not try to put me on the nearest road), it will be useful. |

Good to know. So can you tell it to "go home", and it gives you directions? What happens when you come to the part where you leave the known road? Does it just take you as close as possible? |

I navigated once from one city to another using only the basemap. On the basemap, the city I was navigating to had no roads to it, but there were roads nearby.
The i3 directed me to destination using the existing roads but, when I was in the nearest point it started "recalculating" once a second, giving contradictory directions. |

Was the arrow in your correct position though, or on the nearest road it knew about? |

There was no visual indication (arrow)
As I said, when I was nearby, it recalculated the route every second (and I really mean every second, being quite annoying), the indications resulting being like this:
- "Recalculating... Drive north 16 Km"
- "Recalculating... Drive east 5 Km"
- "Recalculating... Drive south 3 Km"
- "Recalculating... Drive north 16 Km"
I suppose it tried to find roads/streets to get me to destination, but there weren't any.
In a word it does not make off road routing. |

I'm not thinking of telling it to take me to a destination. I just wondered if (when there was no route entered) if it would show my current position correctly when I was nowhere near a known road. |

Yes it does show your current position, not as coordinates but as a point (that triangle which always shows your current position).
If you want to use that information together with a paper map, you should set up your i3 to "navigate" north up (not track up or 3D). This will give you a pretty good idea where you are. At least you will have your bearing but not distance. |

I've had this when pulling into areas with large, unmarked parking areas. The i3 gets confused as to how to get you started on the route, which it can only start from a nearby road. It's then up to you to get to a valid start point - though any road/track that the i3 can see will do... just have to be able to get somewhere that the i3 can calculate its route from.
I've had no problem with this so far as I've always driven to the place so I just double back until I get to the road and the i3 will then recalculate the route. Until then it can do a lot of recalculating and I find it's best to not turn it on until I'm back to the road, so I don't get her whinging at me (the i3, not the wife) |

I've always thought it would be better if it came out with insulting remarks like "you're going the wrong bloody way!" |
