V8 doesn't have any better coverage in europe you'll need to buy another card with the maps of the country concerned which I believe cost £100 or so each, though some1 will probably correct this. Either way they are expensive

I have just seen that Tomtom maps are now available to download for what seems a reasonable price, do you think this will be an indication of the i3 map prices when they become available.

Thanks zogman - sorry I didn't make that clear.

Some Garmin units (including many of the SP range) come with full European maps and this is what I was referring to the upgrade for.

Ok, I have proof positive that there are mixed batches of i3s floating around. I bought an i3 about 3 weeks ago from Staples in Warrington, with OS 2.5 and Maps v7. My father-in-law bought an i3 from another Staples (near Norwich), with OS 2.5 and Maps v8. So, of course, I went back to Staples and asked for a card change - they did it with no fuss, from another unit from what was probably the next delivery they recieved. Interestingly, the map card does not seem to be initialised when you first turn on a unit - you need to initialise the i3 (language, time zone etc.) before the map card is recognised by another unit.

Moral of the story: buy from Staples, they are great!!!

Also, I have found that there are important differences between v7 and v8 maps - of course in reality roads will change, but v7 is sufficiently out of date that it is noticeable when driving. There are several roads (including the new one next to my office) which are not on v7. Also, there appears to be more road labelling on the v8 maps, and dual carriageways are shown as two lines instead of one in some places.

Hope this helps people when choosing! By the way, I think the i3 is a fantastic product...

I'm on my third i3 from Argos now... First one had a faulty display pixel, Second one had no driver CD, third one - so far so good...

Except they all came with v7 map... Evil or Very Mad

Arrghhh... Phoned up Garmin Tech support - was told that v7 was the latest available, and that the v8 rumour had been spread by various internet forums... Confused

Don't get too hung up about the quality of the maps. Although I've found a couple of oddities in the Garmin (NAVTEQ) maps I found others (and more of them) in the Tom Tom (TeleAtlas) maps, partly because the Tom Tom maps were older.

I've found the same thing. From my experience, there are little kinks with the navteq maps on the 320 I have used and a few issues with the teleatlas maps with the GO 300. OVerall though, I've been leaning towards the TA maps because of the ease of use with the 300.

Had an i3 from Staples with 2.5 firmware and v8 maps. I'm not sure of the differences but the v8 maps have the new A34/M4 junction roundabout when the v7 did not!

i bought a map about 18 months ago. it didn't even have my brothers street on it even though it's been in existance for about 7 years.

my point being, as soon as new maps are released they'll be out of date. we seem to have this mentality that because it's computer related it should be instant NOW NOW NOW UPGRADE FOR FREE NOW NOW NOW.

i've not had ANY problems with v7 maps in the 3 months i've had Ivy.
