Hi all,

hope you can help I have an Ipaq RX1950 which is a fairly new model Ipaq and have no idea as to what i need or even if i can use it as a sat nav system for my car. I have been looking at the tom tom 5 navigation wired (as my rx1950 does not have bluetooth) and on the tom tom website actually quotes my model as being compatible. unfortunately when i go to try to purchase one from a dealer my ipaq model is not mentioned anywhere as compatable? has anyone any ideas as to whether it is compatable with my ipaq?? and if so is this the best for me to get or what does everyone reccomend?? i want something easy to use / update / and reliable

many thanks

Welcome to the forum,
I have done some digging around on the HP web site and the same accesories for the 4700 are listed as comaptible with your device, so I suspect that a GPS unit wired for a 4700 will also work with the 1950. To be sure this is correct I suggest you e-mail HP (linked from there web site www.hp.com) and ask them if the connector and pin out is identical to any other IPAQ units, if they confirm that it is the same as a 4700 as well as others, order a GPS that is wired to fit one of the units listed by HP - it will work. As for software if you intend using TomTom then get the latest 5,2 update as this one is compatable with WM2005 - it just makes the loading easier - Mike

Hi mike thanks for the reply. I have e-mailed HP for bit of advice and recieved this reply:
Quote
"The only way you can get GPS to work on the Ipaq is to look for a SD GPS units. This unit doesn't have any Bluetooth features. The other option is to search for a SD card that has Bluetooth on it and then you would be able to connect to a Bluetooth GPS Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center".

seemed a bit confusing but then received this e-mail:

Quote
"Regarding your question about the pins on the iPAQ, if you're referring to the bottom of the unit, where the USB cable plugs in, yes that is a standard connector, similar to all the other models. The tricky part would be getting the software, since it must be Windows Mobile 5.0 compatible to work, check on that first, and then try connecting the GPS".

Now I am a newbie at this sort of thing but if the connection on the bottom of all Ipaqs is the same then why does every company selling GPS systems /cradles state "only compatable for the following models"???? Any advice greatly appreciated as am still in the dark a bit. I have e-mailed "ThinkNavi" and "Holux" to see if they have compatable powered GPS cradle units if so then i am guessing, if i just buy "tom tom 5" map of UK on a SD card plug it in switch it on download the update to 5.2 to make it compatable with windows mobile 5 and hey presto im away?? sounds a little bit too easy that though must be a catch any ideas.

Many thanks

I would sugest it is as easy as you describe, HP's advice seems a little odd as if you get the GPS SDIO then there is nowhere for the TomTom SD card to reside, the same applies if you purchased a Bluetooth SDIO.

Their web site states the External keyboard is compatable with your device and this uses a serial RS232 connection (the same unit will also work with the IPAQ-4700). Also the Other interfaces section within the pdf spec clearly states Serial RS232.

Where the cradle manufactures are listing compatability then it is probably more to do with the physical property of each PDA size etc.
As the PDA is new you may find difficulty getting an active (powered) mount, particulaly with integrated GPS, the connector will fit but the PDA probably won't.

A wired GPS with charger cable is probably you best bet, if it is listed to work with the 4700 then it should work with your unit, for the holder get one that will secure the PDA but allow access to the connector on the bottom of the PDA.
Mike

Cheers mike sounds like a bit more research needed for me yet!!! have had a reply from Holux stating that the Holux cr100 powered mount will fit my RX1950 if i was to purchase the one for the Ipaq 2210 so am going to have a search to see if this looks feasable what are your thoughts, the RX1950 is exactly the same size and shape as the older H1940 model ipaq wow there are just too many models seems that HP change their numbers / models like underwear Laughing Out Loud

There are a few small differences between the two models in terms of size, your unit is ever so slightly smaller so this won't make any difference, I use a Holux GPSlim unit, its a great bit of kit, this contains the newer SiRF-III chipset than the one fitted in the mount you are looking at (so its more sensitive).

Either way the combined mount, GPS, amplifier and speaker (which is always best with the IPAQ units - some models suffer from a weak speaker that will pack up after a while when on full volume) - Get that, the TomTom and you should be away up and running, once you get to this stage, download the camera database from this site, and the excellent POICapture utility to record the positions of cameras (link from the home page) -

As a final tip don't leave it in the car, the cost of replacing the unit will be bad enough, but add to that the cost of a side window - Mike

the cr100 will be fine as it uses sirf2 it is less senseitive than a sift3 chipset but I've used one for the last 12 months in my truck and unless I'm in a very enclosed area I usually get a signal with out problems the only thing to whatch is if you have an athermic windscreen
